It's the same when they say, "the science is settled." Science as it is understood and practiced by people who really seek truth and knowledge for its own sake, driven by reason instead of passions, beliefs and biases, is by definition never settled. It can never be.
When they say “trust the science” what they really mean is trust the scientist. I worked in research for several years. Far too many of the scientists I worked with, whether MD or PhD, valued their ego much more than the science.
Exactly, but as long as they all agree to take whatever each other says as gospel, the house of cards remains. The more importance they give their buddy’s suffix, the more they give to their own. Giant circle jerk except with an unfounded sense of superiority, instead of just shame.
This, I worked with some for a time also and holy moly were the egos huge and from people that could barely hold a normal conversation or remember to wear pants.
If we had "trusted the science" the smallest known item would be what we could see with the naked eye, we'd still be using leaches to fix all ailments, and the earth would be at the center of the physical universe.
Science promoted the use of DDT on children's heads. It also promoted thalidomide for pregnant women. In my mother's childhood (post WWII Netherlands), healthy children were rounded up in neighbourhoods to have BOTH their appendixes and tonsils removed ... because of science.
Science is not trusting. Not trusting what is considered fact or norm by many. It is challenging the accepted and striving for proof that is verifiable, irrefutable and able to be replicated by others. It is ever-seeking and rarely settled longer than a temporary stay.

Science never says " thus and thus are the facts, therefore everyone should such and such."
Science merely establishes facts.
