Finally, in as much as this discussion pertains to the octagon, that concept was in use during the earliest days of Christianity. It was (and is) used to represent the Resurrection of Christ.
The meaning of these symbols predates the Knights Templar by centuries. To assign a nefarious background to everything in the shape of a "plus" is intellectually lazy.
