I have been using Gmail forever and would like to move to something less Google-ey. What providers do you guys use, or prefer? Is ProtonMail good?

Proton Mail is the email service used by Project Veritas. It can't be bad.
Why use an "email service" at all? Why not simply rent your own email server for around $25 a year?
Here's an example: https://www.betterwebspace.com/hosting/
(Not an advert. I'm not on commission. I'm sure that there's cheaper and better out there if you can be bothered to look.)
You don't have to use the web space (but you could if you wished, use it to store photos or whatever).
Note that part of the package is email and they will help you to set it up.
First you choose your own URL name (such as @libsrstoopid.com).
Then you pay for the hosting package that you want.
After about 48 hours (IP propagation time) you can set up an email client on your devices with the supplied parameters.
protonmail has been good so far
+1 for Proton!
Sure looks that way.
I tried using Proton but my work had it blocked since it isn’t based in the USA
Proton is pretty good. I use it.
I use gmail for routine BS, but use protonmail for anything that's important to me.
I use proton mail, I like it so far....I don't email much though.
I went with Tutanota over Protonmail. Based out of Germany. I really appreciate that they are taking extra steps to protect user privacy, like building their own anti-DDoS system instead of using Cloudflare (which requires sharing security certificates). https://tutanota.com/blog/posts/ddos-attack-update/
The Reddit forum for Proton was completely littered with bad experiences of people getting banned and locked out of their accounts. Then I looked closely into Protonmail and saw that they had a lot of partnerships with far left orgs like Amnesty International, and were funded by a bunch of huge lefist orgs and globalist companies. To top it off, it's based in Geneva Switzerland, which is basically the central hub of the New World Order. One user had complained about getting banned for spam, and I remember the moderator response (an employee) made it sound like Proton was sending the emails off to one of its 3rd party partners who was able to read the contents of the mail. Lots of bad vibes.
Tutanota isn't as good, but I trust it more. I hate the default address ([email protected]), but paid accounts get a @tuta.io address which is way easier to remember and read off to people.
Interesting. Wonder why they are being attacked so much?
I guess because they allow private communications out of reach of the tech oligarchs
Good to know. Thanks!
Tutanota indeed is one of the best, if not the best solution for privacy email.
Nothing really compares to gmail as far as features are concerned. The spam filtering, auto-sorting, etc., are unmatched by any other email service.
But like most things, you have to sacrifice convenience for privacy.
I switched to protonmail, but their filtering system is subpar at best, so be prepared to spend some time setting it all up.
I feared as much, but was it worth it to you? Did you make a complete switch, or just set up an alternate email?
I am still transitioning. I use protonmail for things I don't want to be a part of my "profile" and have been slowly moving more things over from gmail.
Proton is what I’ve mostly moved to from Gmail. It is good as far as it working. Is it “secure”. Who the hell knows? At least it’s not Google.
Edit: Also, for 2 factor, I use Authy. https://authy.com/. You can use it wherever you’d use Google Authenticator, including for Gmail.
Says its based in Switzerland. Is that a good thing? At least it's based...kek
Well shit.
My sister told me that some GAW stuff I sent her from my Proton to her gmail got blocked for 'her protection', which tells me to stick to Proton and continue to avoid gmail. None of my other relatives with other emails reported anything censored.

That’s why I want less Google in my life.
