It's simply that Donald Trump is his own self-made independent man, a brilliant beacon of hope, freedom and prosperity that they can't darken. They can't bribe, bully, badger, browbeat, or blackmail him into being their puppet. The first president they couldn't own since forever. Since they can't own him, they must disown him. Hard.
