It's not spinning "satanism" in a positive light, more like eyes wide shut where an unwitting outsider stumbles into the eccentric world of millionaire book collectors obsessed with a rare copy of the ninth gate, a book they believe can conjure the devil. Each of the characters who own a copy are a brilliant representation of the depraved elite who are into this kind of shit. It's actually pretty good, I'd hardly call this movie an endorsement for beelzebub.
That was based the writings and the life of Hunter S Thompson. As wild as it seems it was accurate. Bill Murry also played this part in "Where the Buffalo Roam"

The likely perpetrator was one of the dead boys' stepfather who had a history of abuse, had a false alibi on the day of, was the last person to be seen with the boys and had one of his hairs tied into one of the knots on the boys' bindings.
