I have had amazing success when I cut all dairy out of my diet - wheat also is a trigger - my not work for your friend but offer a something to try if nothing else is working.
This is not a substitute for an emergency inhaler or proper medical care, but I found it amazingly helpful.
I have always been a tea drinker and came across a vague recipe for 'ginger - milk tea.' I decided to give it a try. The ingredients were ginger root, water, looseleaf oolong tea leaves, milk and honey.
I bought ginger root at the grocery store. I didn't have an actual recipe, so I had to approximate it as best I could. What I did was, I cut about an inch to an inch and a half off the ginger root, peeled it, then sliced it like a carrot. I put it into a saucepan with about a quart or so of water and brought it to a boil. I let it boil for a minute, then turned it down and allowed it to simmer. After about 10 minutes I notice the water had changed color and look golden. I figured that was long enough.
Now I used that water to make tea. I used about a teaspoon of the oolong tea and steeped that in a cup of the ginger water. Then I added the milk and honey. After a couple of weeks, I noticed I wasn't using my inhaler as much. The only explanation was the tea - it was the only thing I was doing differently. (Previously I had gone through one inhaler a month, using it every 3-4 hours.)
I kept drinking the tea and eventually started to experiment with green tea instead of oolong tea, no milk, no honey, etc. I would even make the ginger water and keep it in the refrigerator to drink as a cold drink - basically a water substitute.
Now an inhaler lasts me a year! I later learned ginger is an anti-inflammatory.
I would suggest making the tea and drinking just as described (with the oolong tea, milk and honey) for at least a month or at least until you/they see a big difference in their inhaler use and breathing. And if you / they just hate the tea and can't drink it, there are ginger supplement pills and that might work just as well. I haven't used those though, so I can't say. Good luck and let me know if it helps. I hope it does.
Yes! I tried the drink because it was winter at the time and I thought it sounded like a nice warm drink for a chilly day. I had no thoughts about it affecting asthma at the time. When I realized I was using my inhaler less, I could scarcely believe it. To me, this is a miracle. If you or anybody you know has asthma - especially the severest kind where they regularly struggle to breath and have to use an inhaler regularly - please, please, please do persuade them to give the ginger tea a try. I can't say enough what a difference it has made in my life.
If possible, see a functional medicine doc or legit qualified naturopathic doc. there are different underlying causes of asthma, and addressing it from the cause can help reduce episodes and lessen need for suppressive therapies. But asthma is serious and your friend must keep inhaler/nebulizer treatments on hand and avoid triggering it.
FWIW, I developed reactive-airway-syndrome and was taking Advair; my naturopath gave me this which helped me replace the Advair. But your friend may need another approach, particularly if the asthma is related to allergies and/or food sensitivities. It’s not one size fits all, but there is definitely hope and more options than just relying on inhalers.
It’s hard to give natural remedies because any attack could become severe and life threatening. Your friend needs professional care.
Meanwhile, get a straight backed chair and sit backward on it to ease breathing. You can try other positions, such as sitting in a chair and leaning forward, arms resting on a table. Avoid cold air, that makes it worse. A good shot of adrenaline works wonders, but you’ll need medical care for that. Does your friend see a doctor for asthma? A nebulizer may work better for him than an inhaler.
There are lots of preventative things you can do but figuring out what triggers it is key. Cats? Dog dander? Food allergies, dust, mold.. cold is actually a big one. If the attack gets worse after exercising or being outside in cold air, that could be it. It’s always best to get medical care in these cases.
I have had asthma since birth....born premature with pneumonia. I am allergic to everything. I swam competitively for 20 years, which helped with lung capacity. I have been on all kinds of medicine, which seemed to make any respiratory sickness worse. Then I married a farm girl that has to have a dog. Living with a giant hairy dog slowly helped build up a tolerance for animals. I no longer take any asthma medicine except zyrtec everyday. I dont't use the inahler unless it is absolutely necessary. I also have an air purifier with a hepa filter in my bedroom. I replace the furnace filter every month.....hope this helps.
Try Hydrogen Peroxide Nebulization. This cures Covid-19, colds and viruses (and a whole host of ailments). It works wonders. We use it at the first sign of congestion or a cold, and it may help with the asthma.
You will need the following items for the breathing treatment. (The above article also has photos and links to purchase these items if you scroll the whole way down on the page.)
Nebulizer
Nebulizer face mask & tubing (if the nebulizer doesn’t come with one)
3% food grade hydrogen peroxide
Saline solution
Syringe for measuring
Whole Foods and many natural grocers/health stores do sell the 3% food grade hydrogen peroxide in store.
My husband and I have been taking a supplement called Pycnogenol which is French Maritime Treebark. Make sure it has the R for registered. You can get at any vitamin place.
It is listed in PubMed and some can benefit from using less inhalers. Out of the 16 vitamins we take for over 2 years, it is our Top one. I had severe allergies and for years daily took antihistamines. I now take no meds and can really breathe well for over 2 years!
Abstract
Aim: The simplification of the management of asthma in the different clinical phases of this common chronic inflammatory disorder is the main goal of therapy. Pycnogenol®, a standardized extract of French maritime pine bark, inhibits expression of 5-lipoxygenase and consequently decreases leukotriene levels in asthmatic patients. Pycnogenol® anti-inflammatory activities may be supportive when taken in addition to inhalation corticosteroid (ICS), putatively allowing for a reduction in dosage and frequency of ICS administration.
OTC albuterol is back again... Not cheap though... After they changed the "Gas" in it to save the environment, How'd that go?... Anyway, I keep one for absolute emergencies and take a hot shower to relieve most spells of contact induced asthma... and yes arms up does buy you some time but only a while. ~ That's my experience.
Diet. Read a "Whole 30" Book. They discuss the role of diet in Asthma (and many other things) very clearly and intelligently. You may or may not choose to use their diet plan, but its the best discussion of the topic I have read.
My understanding is all asthma is a product of parasitic infection. So a modest natural remedy may be a teaspoon organic turpentine daily (listen to Dr. Jennifer Daniels on a variety of YouTube or podcasts) or an appropriate dose of ivermectin. Sunshine sweating and cold immersion can help get the parasites cleared from the lungs. Wim hoff breathing technique over a stretch of time is amazing and free. The top top top health product in my opinion is the aquacure by George wiseman. Try to watch any of his many YouTube videos or podcast interviews. This has worked wonders on my parents. I knew it would be beneficial but seeing my parents month by month surprised me. Essentially it's bioavailable human fuel and is reversing all kinds of conditions. Daily Sunshine bathing , habitual breath exercises, and clean spring water, nature exposer cannot be over emphasized and 12 cell salt mineralization. God bless and best of luck!!! And avoid medical doctors at all costs, unless you want to have them curse you with their dogmatic scientism.
Go and do the things (and stop doing the other things).
Protip: Use local and raw honey. Doesn’t hurt to call/email local beekeepers directly and ask for bulk+cash pricing.
Edit:
Like most “diseases”, asthma is not a disease, but a symptom of an underlying disease: chronic inflammation, which is itself just a symptom of shitty diet, shitty sleep, shitty activity levels, shitty stress levels, and/or shitty direct sunlight exposure.
“Monoclonal antibody biologic therapies have recently entered clinical practice with significant impacts on asthma outcomes.”
👆Thus, many of the natural prophylactics, treatments, cures, etc. for “covid” (another “symptom” that’s mistaken for a disease: immunosuppression cause by the life shittinesses mentioned above) also help prevent asthma:
How could I forget? Don’t forget to fast and I mean properly fast. Like, don’t eat anything at all for more than a day or two straight every week or two.
A HEPA Air purifier in the bedroom at night certainly helped me one windy night when my asthma was absolutely shocking from all the pollen and dust in the air. Allowed me to stop coughing and actually get some sleep.
Had tried purple Seretide puffer (steroid + long term broncodilator) multiple times that evening and a few puffs of blue Salbutamol? puffer by this stage.

Not joking - maybe try ivermectin, won’t hurt. Who knows what else it may help with. 🤷♂️
There is a good pic on this site of “sitting the wrong way on a chair” to ease symptoms. It lifts the rib cage up, allowing the lungs to expand more.

There are a lot of yoga websites with positions claiming to help asthma. Idk, I don’t do yoga but may be worth a try.
I'm so glad you asked this. Yes! I'll DM you.
Sure, of course.
Elderberry helps but it's no cure. My mom and some friends have copd this is what they use
Look up the buteyko breathing method, I used to use this as a child when I had asthma and it helped:)

I have a friend who had bad asthma until he was like 30 when he stopped eating gluten. Gone.
What's your ethnic heritage? He's Puerto Rican and i assume gluten allergies are more common in native American people

I was told by a doctor in 1972 that no one has ever died of asthma. He said to come in if my lips turned blue.
Mine was a seasonal allergy until the swine flu shot in 1976. Now I have it all the year. No medicine really helps at all.
No doctor has ever really helped or even seemed concerned about it.
Following because I have it now after Covid. Someone said take NAC which I have been.

Keep a rescue inhaler such as Ventolin which contains albuterol, a short-acting bronchodilator.
