I looked it up because I’ve heard various iterations of its history. The heiress to Post Cereal had it built in 1927. She willed it to the US Government in 1973 to be used as a winter WH for presidents and visiting dignitaries. Nixon preferred a location in Key Biscane and Carter wasn’t interested in using it. The government returned it to the Post Foundation after maintenance costs became too high. Trump tried buying it for $15 million but was rejected. He then bought the land between it and the ocean for $2 million and threatened to build a place big enough to block the ocean view. That drove down the price and he bought it for $7 million in 1985
