IMO the "acid rain" was caused by the chemtrails that they were testing back then with sulphur compounds. It stopped when they switched to aluminium, barium and strontium compounds.

I remember an elaborate study that was not much publicized, but after it came out, the whole subject mysteriously collapsed. It turned out that the "acid rain" notion was derived from the apparent acidity of some lakes that were fed by rainfall. The study discovered that the watersheds of the lakes had conifer trees, and the effect of rainwater soaking through needles fallen to the ground was to make them... acidic. Oh. Never mind. All the concern about sulfur dioxide and sulfur trioxide was pointless.
By the way, there are no "chemtrails." How could you possibly know anything about something that doesn't exist? It is all in your imagination.
Makes sense they need a slightly acidic soil and leave it a bit more acidic.
Ozone (o3) is naturally regenerative. Stop producing the reactive emission and it doesn't take too long to mend

The 70s was all about the imminent Ice Age. That wasn't going over as well as they hoped, so the 80s was filled with Soviets and Iran. Then in the 90s they went back to climate, but this time the opposite in Global Warming. The Soviet and Iran fears were good, but they can only go on so long. Climate however, is forever; its a solid fear you can push for an entire century.
After Global Warming was faltering because the data was no longer really showing warming in the 2010's they went with Climate Change. You can't argue with Climate Change. Its an undeniably true statement out the gate. If you want to argue it you must first concede the truth that the Climate changes. It's really rather brilliantly diabolical.
I like Climate Change better when it used be called weather.

In the mid-1960's, our grade school classes used to get Weekly Reader. One I vividly remember was an article on the coming Ice Age. Scared me and I had trouble sleeping for a few nights.
I have an issue of popular science from the 1960s and it was mostly positive news about progress and packed with self-improvement articles, either through your career in STEM, training programs, DIY projects. There were othrer interesting things too and in the 80s they even sold kit helicopters and cars.
Fast forward to the 2000s and you have completely BS engineering and science ideas like synthetic human organs to consume less, and of course the GLOBAL WARMING articles about everything. Nothing about career advancement, no DIY projects for your home, nothing related to self improvement, all negative spiteful and hateful of mankind and our civilization. It's a huge change and I'm glad nobody reads these things anymore.
We are on the verge of a new ice age, so they were actually telling the truth whether or not they realized it.
They were just a few decades early. Russian scientists have been saying we're going into an ice age for a number of years now. Sun spot cycles, etc.

When I was young we had some beautiful Usborne science books, one was about planets and one was about prehistoric times.
It was from these that I learned that we are in an interglacial and overdue another ice age. This was all to do with the Himalayas and the Tibetan high plain changing the climate patterns IIRC.
Anyway, because of all the evidence of previous ice ages and cold adapted animals, I believed in the interglacal theory and I still do.
I never really took global warming very seriously. I took peak oil very very seriously though. Still thinking on that one.
Peak oil? No I think that’s another hoax. Oil is a renewable resource that naturally forms in the earths crust.
Not a hoax. Just a continuing mis-estimation of petroleum reserves and resources. It keeps being pushed out, and keeps being overtaken by events. The idea of abiotic petroleum is not a majority theory, so don't be surprised if the mis-estimation continues.
