Yea I can remember a feature or two on Hockey Night in Canada on this subject back before the world went crazy and I still loved watching the NHL. (I live near Detroit) Hard to believe its been 4 full seasons since I watched a game.
It's been 3 seasons for me. Once the NFL started in with that WOKE garbage, hockey was the last sport to be watched in our household. No more sports or cabal TV for us. Don't miss it. I do have fond memories of family outings to San Jose to watch live games. Kinda sad.
Mine is a hockey family going back generations. From peewee to junior to college to the pros it was always hockey hockey hockey.
Yes it is sad.
Same here. My relatives in Canada and my brothers played hockey both in high school and college.
One of my favorite cousins played in the Canadien Juniors - never got drafted by the NFL. He played in the US minors for 7 years where he met his wife. They live in Hamilton Ontario and support the Truckers big time. They, their kids and their grandkids attended the Toronto protest walk this past weekend.
None of my family members have played in the NHL but a couple have gotten close. A lot of college hockey players though and 1 in the OHL. By family members I am including my extended and very large Irish Catholic family lol.
I tried to walk on at Michigan Tech but at the time they were a power. I could have played at Ferris State but engineering was my goal so I stayed in Houghton. Funny how things work out though because after undergrad I went to Michigan, met my wife got married, had a kid and never used my degree. lol I started a business soon as I graduated.
My nephews HS team won 3 of 4 State titles and he scored the game winner in the finals his freshmen year. He went on to play for the Aberdeen Wings in SD hoping to be one of those 21 year old freshmen at a college power. Covid derailed that and he is playing for a very good school but at a lower level.
Have big dreams for my niece though. She is 14 and plays with the boys still. Shes the best player on the ice. Shes already getting scholarship offers. We are hoping against hope that the world political situation rights itself and she can play on Team USA in the olympics one day.
I grew up playing in the Boston area. Bobby Orr and that era major Bruins fan as a child. I miss it.
Yea hockey is more than a sport for a lot of families in Detroit and Boston. Its a way of life almost Canadian in its nature.
Gotta include Minnesota. But yeah I really enjoyed it and was skating all winter, every winter. We had lakes, ponds & frozen river within walking distance. Had our own neighborhood team & encouraged other kids in our town to form their own teams. It got pretty big too. Imagine children doing that today? It’s too cold! I wanna play Zelda! Fuggin disgraceful in my book.
Definitely different times when we grew up. Ive been telling my kids and grandkids for decades that when I was young we couldnt wait to get outside. We would leave at 8 and not come home til dinner time. Summer there was swimming, fishing and forts in the woods. Winter we had hockey, icefishing, sledding. Weather hardly mattered. Todays kids are slaves to technology -- exactly how the cabal wants it. It keeps them fat, unhealthy and ignorant.
Went to the old garden once when the Canadians were in town as a kid.
Forever memories.
That’s AWESOME!! My word, I could ramble-on about my memories there! I lived in a suburb that had a B&M railroad station downtown and we would hop on the train & just go into Boston for the day. I started doing that around the age of 13. Took about 25-30 minutes and stopped right behind the Boston Garden. I went to Bruins games, Celtics and a multitude of concerts. After a Bad Company concert…I swear half my school was there…they had to stop the train twice on the way home cuz classmates of mine were so messed up they climbed on top of the train. The diesel engine exhaust vented above on the roof of those behemoths and it got cookin around 50-60mph so not too smart. Heck yeah memories!!
Hello fellow almost Detroiter!
I don't watch hockey anymore either. Used to be a diehard fan. I really do miss Joe Louis Arena. I got to play there one time against the red wings alumni team.
Youll like this then. When I was a kid somewhere around 1972 or 1973, we went to a game at the Olympia to see the Jr. Wings who was their farm team at the time. After the game the kids were invited to skate on the ice.
While we were still out there the Red Wings came out to practice. They let us skate with them and shoot and take passes for a few minutes and then we had to leave the ice. But we got to stay and watch practice and before the formal practice began they shot pucks over the boards for us all to run and collect. I still have one signed by Alex Delvecchio and Marcel Dionne. I have it in a beautiful glass case on my desk and am looking at it right now.
Years later I tried to get Mickey Redmond to sign it but didnt have any luck.
One other thing... I have a brick from the Old Red Barn. My friends and I drove down there the day they demolished it.
