The Syrian war was really started by Assad refusing to let a Turkey-Qatar pipeline be built in Syria. I can't find it, but a few years ago I saw mention that it was proposed to be built by a Ukrainian oil and gas company... either way, a big part of why the Syrian war happened was to reduce dependence on Russian oil and gas in Europe.
Putin probably does want Ukraine to be part of Russia. It's got excellent farmland, it's not as cold as Siberia, and is very valuable real estate. He really wants to put the band back together so they can play "Back in the USSR."
But first, he's taking out the trash. He does not want a country that is infested and rotting from the presence of these stinking NWO globalists.
That's why the usual suspects (Obamas, Clintons, Bidens, Kerrys, Romneys, etc etc) are all screaming like crazy over this. Putin is going in there to root out their worldwide capilal city of human trafficking, money laundering, computer hacking and black market activities.

So my guess is, Ukraine will simply no longer exist and will become part of Russia moving forward.
Putin's timing is crazy too, as a red wave sweeps across the US and many corrupt dems / rinos are no longer seeking re-election.
Plus an almost guaranteed Trump return which would drop the sanctions.
