I read that book many times as a teen and young adult and I have a high reading level, so I did not misunderstand it. It’s probably much worse than most people realize and looking back, it’s perverted filth wrapped in pride and false enlightenment, further obscured by his writing style. The fact that I saw it on my English teacher’s top ten books (#1) or that my French teacher liked this book, or it being on “classics” lists does not make it okay.
