I think he wants it all. His ideals say free speech should be allowed and he's okay with people being negative toward his ideas, but he'll keep pressing towards his other ideals of technology pushed to its wildest limits, even to the point of changing the way the Creator has intended his creation to be, because to him, God is not in the equation; or if God does exist for him, He is not something to be taken into account on a moral basis. Edited to add: I just watched a video where Elon says religion and science probably cannot co-exist. I think that is a problem.
Humanity is at a crossroads techwise. Freedom of speech at least allows a discussion on where it is going and for people to opt out if they incline and not be bullied into it like the WEF wants
And yet some religions have internationally renown Physics professors, Neural designers; all working to improve life. The more you understand Quantum Physics, Entanglement, String Theory, Black hole theory, relativistic theory and even chaos; the more evident God becomes.
When you begin to understand the complexities that make life possible, the trillions of complex things that had to happen - just right, at the precise moments in time, the harder it is to believe that we are just 'happen stance".
The biggest problem religion plays, is it's inflexibility in grasping ideas from a different perspective. I offer the number of lives that were tortured to death, for daring to state that the earth is not the center of the universe.
I don't think there's anything wrong with that, but at what price? What kinds of things do you need to agree to to be part of the neural network, capable of receiving the latest version?
Your edit reminds me of a friend who expressed fear of the evil living forever through Tech.
I laughed, cause even as a spiritualist he is, I managed to explain that God (or whatever created us) is like a parent. And as parents. It is natural to want and witness our spirit becoming greater than ourselves. That one day we will all move on to a new level of the spirit. Leaving behind this level of the Mortal coil behind.
And the evil? They're attempting to evolve horizontally. They will never ascend.
It seems to me that Elon WANTS to be challenged on his ideas at the very, very least. Twitter being a propaganda platform that stifles open discussion, by its very nature, eliminates challenge unless its the 'wrong' politics.

I see nothing wrong with being able to control a replacement bionic limb with your brain.
There’s a Q drop about research for just such a thing and Q links to additional info showing it was about MK Ultra at the time.
