I don't think it was the Patriots. We've seen this play out before with Juicy Smollett, and have come to expect this sort of thing. Perhaps it was the J6 committee that was surprised that their super secret star witness was not what they expected.
Yesterday's ridiculous story was so ludicrous that most Americans could see right through it. Perhaps this story was intended to chip away at the remaining folks who still believe in the J6 narrative.

Remember when some radio talkshow guys baited Adam Schiff into believing some bogus story about Trump, and recorded their conversation with Schiff? He was salivating and took every word they said as fact.

Schiff will believe anything. Planting bogus witness with a ridiculous story would be easy, and would discredit the committee.
