I planted broccoli for the first time ever. How easy is it to take care of and grow?
(It's my son's favorite vegetable. I flipping love it all ways but raw.)
I like it blanched just a little bit. Same with our son.But my wife loves to devour it raw. Just a bit too harsh for me, causes itchiness in the throat when eaten raw.
look up what Zone you are i am zone 9 but depending on the zone or if you are gardening indoors determines when the best time to grow is.
I'm between 7/8...right on the border, I think. I assume since they're propagated near here and sold here that they're for my zone. We shall see! :)
Yes, for instance we're in 7 but in the hottest part of summer our broccoli bolted. The flowers were tasty, but the plants were done.
It likes to be fed, fish emulsion fertilizer until the heads start forming, then a good all around vegetable fertilizer, I use organic, but you dont have to if you dont mind. Those little white butterflies that fly around are cabbage looper breeders, you do not want them, I use wood ash to dissuade them, but a good light weight row cover cloth is worth it, there is also a terrible bugger called a swedish midge, you cannot see it but it will ruin the heads of your broccoli, again, row covers are great. I strongly disapprove of chemical pesticides and herbicides, so that is why my advice leans the organic way. Its a big plant, the leaves are very big, make sure it has enough space, there is nothing like garden picked broccoli, it does not compare to anything store bought. Good Luck! It likes water.
