The first chapter of American Betrayal by Diana West is a MUST read (download sample on Kindle to read first chapter). Its fascinating and explains this very point. It was earlier than 1960s actually. (The rest of the book is okay, but nothing great)
Also thee is an excellent TV show The Americans which is about two KGB spies who infiltrate America. The show itself is very interesting, but also shows behind the scenes of how this worked and how Americans themselves were complicit, one way or another.
