Sadly true. Its mostly due to insecurity, I think. If you are not rooted and grounded in the Lord and know His abundant provision and blessings you become self protective. Then again, the Lord loves a joyful giver but sometimes giving can hinder rather than help.

Amen. Charity has limits like everything else. Too much and it can destroy. The same can be applied to foreign aid, wouldn't you say?
personal opinion: foreign aid has done more harm to africa than dumping toxic waste ever could...
Personal opinion or fact? We give them food, it makes the farm industry worthless. Can't be a farmer and feed your family or make a living producing food. So instead they fight over table scraps.
Same can be said for pretty much everything we donate. In times of need after natural disasters, sure. But they'll never get off the teat unless we take them off. They'll never be self sufficient unless we let them. Which means letting them fall and pick themselves up.
It hurts us and them.

sad part is we can't even drop them cold turkey... gonna have to wean them off slowly...

Absolutely true. We learned this from experience. It's good to make your boundaries ahead time and stick to them, lest you be swayed in the moment. Manipulators know how to use your good intentions against you.
You have to say, "this far and no more," and sometimes you have to just say no. But the best protection is to listen to the Lord and follow His voice. Nothing is hidden from His sight, and He give wisdom for the asking.

I don't give money. If someone says they're hungry, I take them inside and buy them a meal. Most people begging for money want it for alcohol or drugs. They are surprised when I get them what they claim they want.
For people who really need help, I also mostly buy what they need. There was a woman who was in bad health with cancer and raising a lot of kids. My wife and I bought them a bag of groceries and bought clothes and toys for all the kids, as Christmas was coming.
For me, the process is to take myself out of the equation, my ego, my hidden need to seek approval, etc. I ask God to use me in service, and I ask for strength when I feel weak, anything I could possibly give someone that would do them any good comes from God. Money? I don't have that much laying around. People know that, but my time and effort? Well, there's some advice that goes like this, "don't cast pearls upon swine". I have taken folks in after a fire destroyed their trailer, shared my barn for folks with animals who needed it through the winter, gifted a good chainsaw to a man who had to harvest his own wood for winter. I give to the food pantry.If I have more than I can use, I share the extra. I may be a rural homesteader, but I moved into that lifestyle 35 years ago. I was raised in NYC, Queens, excellent training to avoid getting scammed of goods or services. Always pray when someone requests something from you, you will get the answer.God wants us to show charity, it is considered a Grace, but he also provides us with discernment if we pray for it.

I am a loose giver of money to those in actual Need, but i also give free advice to the 'takers'. Get A JOB.
