AND Amazon AND FaceBook AND Disney AND Netflix. Stop buying and using them. Let's take 'em down.

Agreed. I have cancelled all of them, for quite some time now.

Not too long ago I switched to an iPhone from Android. As bad as Apple is, it has slightly better security than the fragmented Android market.

I don't really like the iPhone or Apple, however. If I had an alternative that did not suck, I would switch to it in a heartbeat...

Musk is onto something. Maybe he was planning another phone all along.

He showed it already but it is android based - no better.

As bad as Apple is, it has slightly better security than the fragmented Android market.

Bunch of BS here.

Android can be rooted and will have better security if you know what you're doing. You can install a firewall that blocks apps from communicating at all regardless of permissions, as an example.

And fragmentation doesn't affect those who root their phones as long as there's interest in porting the latest version of Android to their models, and doesn't matter at all for those who upgrade their phones every 2-3 years.

Agree. I liked my old blackberry and these silly apple people invented their spied cellphones. It was fun.

Even rotary phones listened to you 24/7, but at least they didn't track you with 10,000+ parameters while slowly killing you with EMF.

If you were on a party-line with the old rotary, then everybody was listening to you.

In this case there is a 100% chance apple removes them from the app store - its in their TOS that they will remove apps that skirt their piece of subscriptions/payments.

That's not what they're doing, though.

If a city puts a tax on soda, so a gas station chain stops selling soda in their location within that city, but still allows customers to buy soda in their locations outside of that city, after which they are free to bring their soda into the city, is that tax evasion?

Because this is the same thing. Apple has a claim on a portion of in-app sales. If you don't allow in-app sales, you're not skirting around anything.

If it were, should Apple also have a claim to all existing sales done through a website on the customer's computer, then utilized on their iPhone? If I sign up for YouTube Premium on my computer, then happen to use my account on my iPhone, is that YouTube skirting around Apple's piece of the subscriptions? If not, then why is it any different if YouTube were to just not allow you to buy the subscription within the app?

I agree with you, but that's not how apple sees it. Theres plenty of cases where they have removed apps that dont allow you to make the purchase on their app, because they interpret it as skirting their rules.

Okay so explain Netflix?

This isn't a new concept. Lots of apps do this. The app literally just says you need an account and we can't tell you how to get one in this app.

▲ 1 ▼
– ILearnedToCode 1 point 3 years ago +1 / -0

Netflix, owned and operated by pedophiles pushing propaganda? Of course apple makes exceptions. It's their discretion

permalink parent save report block reply
▲ 1 ▼
– UnidentifiedWhiteMan 1 point 3 years ago +1 / -0

Okay.......? That's not really relevant to my point.

Literally every streaming app does the same thing.

It's not a new thing.

It's VERY common with subscriptions.

Spotify does the same thing too.

I could go on.

Ok so I decided to do some research, and you are right - Epics lawsuit forced them to allow apps to do this.

This was back when fortnite was removed

https://www.cnbc.com/2021/09/10/epic-games-v-apple-judge-reaches-decision-.html

Prior to this, apple was taking 30% from all platforms if their app was on the store (for in app purchases done on iOS, it also didnt apply to subscriptions)

It's more complicated than that.

With Apple, yes, all of their phones are all Apple, all the time.

But with Android... Android is open-source. There are a wide range of manufacturers for Android phones (Samsung, LG, Motorola, the list goes on and on). Many of these manufacturers, often in conjunction with phone carriers, will use their own closed-source variants of Android. But none of this is really on Google, except when they do it with their own line of phones (Google Pixel).

The issue is the de facto duopoly on app stores. Android phones are not limited to only downloading apps from Google Play. But most consumers only bother using Google Play. Some manufacturers will have their own app store that have some marketshare (Samsung has an app store).

This makes it a very difficult situation. Because Google has the market share on app stores almost legitimately. The consumers mostly have a choice, even after purchasing a device, and choose to give it to them. Sure, there are some ways that this is "enforced," like the Play Store coming pre-installed and such, and some phones making it needlessly difficult to download apps from elsewhere, but still.

I'm not saying Google is the good guy here. But I'm saying we need to first recognize what the problem is in order to tackle it.

Android is fine. Consumers are the problem.

I’d highly recommend everyone who cares about privacy looks into GrapheneOS. It allows you to run Google apps in a “sandbox” where they do not have access to your data unless you give it permission. iOS does this same thing, but it has been found that Apple collects the data anyway.

I'd buy a Tesla phone as long as it came with physical hardware switches to turn off mic, camera, Wifi, baseband, GPS.

Much like McAfees privacy phone that never came out

I really hope Linux phones become more usable as a daily driver.

There's already one that has the switches: https://puri.sm/products/librem-5/

But Linux on mobile seems pretty subpar so far.

People need to open those up to see if the physical switches actually shut off parts of the phone.

Freedom phone was a nonsensical larp.

You're best off with a Pixel phone running CalyxOS or GrapheneOS.

I’d recommend grabbing a used google pixel and installing GrapheneOS. Cheaper and better security options. Just takes some work to get it installed.

Not just the phones. iPads are prolific. Few private pilots fly without one. Nav apps, tracking. You name it. We’d be better off to reform Apple as a resource than obliterate the useful tech?
