They should've let McCarthy win in the first round or two. They should've let enough votes to slide over to McCarthy in order to (1) send the (dishonest) signal that they are collaborative, (2) try to get a favor or two in return, and (3) keep the Freedom Caucus from getting representation on committees and rules changes that together will make it impossible for the Dems to get anything done in the House for two years.
Once again, the Dems crapped all over an opportunity. What morons.
It was a lose-lose situation. Remember that President Trump endorsed Kevin McCarthy. Therefore, if any democrat were to vote for McCarthy, he or she would be voting for President Trump. Plus it would be seen as treason against the party.

Honestly though, if throw average Democrat objectively looked at what the Freedom caucus got in terms of procedure, they'd be supportive of it. The House is enormously dysfunctional right now.
I disagree with the premise. I think that this was a considered political calculation. First, they fed and deepened the rift in the Republican party. Second, they laid the groundwork for fractures leading to dysfunction. Doesn't matter if we agree with the outcome or label warfare (eg "RINOs" vs "Patriots") or if we long for gridlock so nothing can be further screwed up, The Dems have set up the Reps for a theme of incompetence and will be well and loudly abetted by the MSM. the2024 campaign season has already begun.

I think the situation played out as it was supposed to. I quite enjoyed the show and feel that the "church committee" that Matt got could be very important. Holding McCarthy's (I don't trust him, but that's inconsequential here) feet to the fire, for the country to see his desperation to become speaker, may work in our favor as time goes on. Perhaps my reading comprehension is off tonight. .....

Nope, I believe they will use the 20 as scapegoats for the next 2 years bashing the republican party as the do-nothing, can't govern, extremist party so vote for dems in 2024 if you want "normal" to return to washington and want to "GET STUFF DONE"
