Ahhh now we’re getting somewhere. Lobbyists and politicians decide railroad regulations. The easy answer is you want to transport hazmat far away from population centers(cities) in the case of a derailment, unfortunately sparsely populated usually means rural, and farmland.
I understand that point, but how is spilling hazmat from a train parked directly in front a culvert into a major river and and a water table that supports most of the midwest any better of an answer than spilling into a populated area.
I think cities would actually be a MUCH better place to accidentally spill as they have the infrastructure near by to handle it much better
Most severe hazmat derailments involve massive fires, which is undesirable in a location packed with buildings and people. That’s how I view that anyways. One particularly bad one was in Quebec somewhere in 2013, and something like 70 people burned to death, and this was in a very small town. Hard to find an “ideal” place for any derailment honestly.
If you are attempting to convince me that contaminating the immediate water supply of one of the main inland fresh water rivers in the US as well as contaminating the water table for the entirety of the midwest is less bad than 70 people burning to death, I think we can just agree to disagree

I 100% believe if the MSM had jumped all over the OH train wreck when it happened and went in hard about how it was going to destroy the environment and how DJT was (at least partially) responsible because of the deregulation and such, the narrative here would be that the wreck wasn't that bad, and environmentalists were BSing about the environmental effects and this was just a ff to make Trump look bad.
But because MSM was quiet about it for so long, well, then obviously this train wreck is the worst thing that has ever happened in the history of rail transport, and now there aren't enough regulations surrounding transporting hazardous materials and won't someone think of the poor fish in the OH River (nevermind that tree huggers have been raising hell about big energy (coal mines especially) dumping toxic waste in the OH River for decades).
