What's wrong with barber shops?
Had to look this up:
Barber shops became hangouts, places where low characters assembled. Smutty stories, malicious scandal and gossip of all kinds characterized barber shops until a few years ago. A barber shop was a place where men showed their lower instincts and where women dared not enter.

Barbers used to be filthy, because in addition to haircuts, they performed surgery.
The spiral pole? Comes from a bloody towel being wrapped around a white pole by the wind.
I'm not joking.
Thank God for advances in sanitation.
Depends on the location
Ahhh... bingo! Can't have any of that pernicious vice among the staff!
Too many Playboy magazines laying around? JK
Maybe a place of gossiping, crude joking
Could be. Or possibly too ostentatious?
Johnny Depp played a crazy barber. Who knew this is based on real life.?
Different times...I doubt any teacher in 1872 would want to teach in 2023 if they could even conceive of the horror of kids being groomed, faerie story book reading, gender indoctrination all without parental knowledge
You sure that's how things went?
What is that from?
They have been attributed to Monroe County, Iowa; a one-room schoolhouse in Maine; and an unspecified schoolhouse in Arizona.
Alright, thank you.
what a difference 150 years makes.....sad
I thought #7 was interesting. No one expected the govt. to come to the rescue.
being a teacher is an awful job anyhow. The more people discouraged from becoming public school teachers, the better. Then they can just shut the whole system down.
You'd be fired for...getting married?
Don't want to set a bad example as a working mother.
I have this on my wall as a reminder of 3 generation family of teachers.
2023 Teachers: …What’s a woman?
My great grandma bought the school she went too as a child. Not saying your wrong. As of course stories get told differently....
Oh!
Making kids go to government schools for 10+ hours is basically how we got here.
1872, and already with the massive pay raises for teachers. :p
But seriously...getting a SHAVE is a sign of questionable character? The word 'asinine' is offended because it can't adequately describe that policy.
