I have not made any serious inquiries but my thinking is that Chansley was appropriated by the bad guys. He was dressed up to make for good, memorable, photo ops and then he was wheeled from photo to photo by the Capitol police. He was meant to show what crackpots all those deplorables were.

Chansley's clownish dress was so outrageous, it was imitated in Brazil when people protested election fraud. Was Chansley a patsy of circumstances playing the fool on the hill? That's how I read him too. I don't like his style and the way he advertised MAGA and Q. Not helpful at all unless it's a deep sting.
