None got airplay. It was all negative messages like "put a cap in your ass" and "beat that ho" crap. They earned their criminal reputations and you can count the body bags within their own industry as proof.
There was rap before that music industry move and it was way more creative. Kool Keith, Speech of Arrested Development, and many others talk about this all the time. I’m not a student of that era so unfortunately I can’t cite things off the top of my head but it was very different.

And it was all by design. Some artists back in the early 90’s were offered stock in private prisons. Prisons that would soon be filled with the help of their music. There’s a video out there where a popular hip hop artist talks about it.
They are now working for the private prison industry. Filling the prisons with young men who decide to be gangsters like their music promotes!
