This can’t be an accident.

I just had this random, maybe not random thought:
I was taught in first grade phonics that double consonants following a vowel make the vowel short sound. So 'stollen" would be pronounced STALIN. (Short "o" sound, not long "o" sound.)
Toll booth, roll of quarters, polling place. First rule of the English language, No rule is absolute.
True, true. Like I said, random thought.
Ooooo sound.
Shot would be better. Replace the t with ll. Shtoll and add en.
But that is English for you. It ain't Germanic, it ain't French and it is not Latin. Totally bastardized.
Isn't diversity wonderful? English is a melting pot of every other damned language of the world. Look at how confusing the rules are; Tomb, Comb, Bomb. Crazy!
Bough, through, enough
In the northeast, it would be promised Stalin.
Source: live in the northeast. That's how I pronounced it when reading it.
pollen
I checked, and the German pronunciation for "stollen" is "SHTAH-len"
fwiw
I also read it, in Trump's posts, as "Stalin"
No.... Schtoll - en, singular is stoll like.in still. ( Stillen = to make quote. Giving relief)
Hol is.familiar to you. Hole. But the pronunciation is all wrong as it is hol where the e as in uh is dying away.
It.may be derived from helle or Elle. Helland, Holland, at least that would not surprise me.
In the case of stollen, the first syllable is pronounced as schtol, as in shot. But then with a well round ll as in shell. En is then added to that.
Like Holland.
