I love it when people who have no idea about the military start putting in their two cents 🙄
It is FAR more likely that this was that particular Seaman Apprentice's first time doing Colors, and he fucked it up. They are at the POA and saluting - they can't fix the flag until after Colors is completed.
Without multiple videos of the same ship (or multiple ships) doing this, then it's just an ASVAB-waiver squid screwing up.
As a former sailor who has seen this happen, he'd be "popped tall" in front of the C.O.'s "at sea" quarters/office waiting for his ass chewing. Then, he'd go to see the CMC (Command Master Chief), then his Department Officer, then his Departmental Master Chief, then his shop Chief and LPO, and if there's any ass left to chew on, he may go see the Battle Group Commander, usually a 1 or 2 Star Admiral. And then he'd be standing endless hours of watch, possibly the dreaded "fashion show," and probably something creative like writing a 5k word essay on the history of the US Flag, what it represents, and what the US Flag Code is for, only to have it crumpled and torn up in his fave without ever being read by anybody.
Thanks fren. I would have automatically believed the narrative being pushed in this case because I have several family members that were career Navy and I've never seen them cut any corners or fail at anything. Every detail must be perfect. Every time. No exceptions. I need to remember that we're all human and everybody was a beginner at one time. Thanks for your service to our country and this board.
My buddy had his first night standing duty chief in port on a sub, and someone unclipped the line off the flag and replaced it with one that was way too short and no one noticed.
So, his first time doing colors, with the damn CO standing there watching, the doofus trying to raise it could only get it up the pole like a foot. Jesus Christ it was a sick burn. We never figured out who set him up, but he leaned a lesson that day. When taking over as duty chief always make sure you got the colors and stuff ready to go and it’s not all jacked up.

Former Navy here. This is my take also, dumb junior sailor fucked up.
Oh man, I can't imagine how hard they'd come down on his ass for that!

That goes beyond disciplinary/corrective action and reveals the thin end of the sadistic streak which runs through such organisations.
Such a waste of time and resources.
In the old days he’d be flogged over the yardarm, bread and water for a week, and swabbing the deck. None of this administration bs.
Hot damn!

I wonder what kind of detail these guys will get put on after this.
Lol for real. This looks like a fuckup.
