You think they were able to play with virology and bioengineering that far back?
I understand the first recorded successful vaccination was in 1796, but it was just sheer dumb luck and observation, and not very complex from what I could tell: just injecting cowpox into an 8 year old to inoculate against smallpox.
Could virology have been so advanced even in the vicinity of WW1 that they'd be able to bioengineer a weapon of that magnitude?
Yes, there was an attempt to inoculate the military against typhoid, but it failed and induced serious illness, creating paratyphoid. So a stronger vaccine was created and hence Spanish Flu was born.
How do perfectly-healthy, young-strong farm boys die at basics within a month of arriving?
Over a hundred years ago and my heart aches for those parents/families.
"Thus another of our brave young men has given all for the cause of justice and humanity. It causes us reflect when we think of the awfulness of this and of the severe punishment that must in time be inflicted upon those responsible for the beginning of such horrid hostilities." (Excerpt from Nov 1918 Newspaper obituary)
This obviously continues if nothing is done to stop the evil.

That would be a chilling thought.
Research about the Spanish flu vaccine and what happened.

they've been using our soldiers as guinea pigs for decades. it's truly sad.
Think of it less as “bioengineering” and more as “poisoning”.
They absolutely had that level of skill at poisoning. I expect what they learned was a new trick in administering poison.
Heard they kill the indians with small pox? Infected blankets I heard.
Yeah but that's a bit different, that's using an existing virus as a weapon rather than engineering it.
