I joined a long time ago and I did not verify anything. I think the verification only applies for blue check marks. You can join as a lowly anon with no privileges.

I made another X account with a different email address and then added Cats5's link above to home screen and logged on.
It seems to be working fine. Sort of a low tech solution.
