Exactly right. We travel to them to train them, they travel to us to train them... it's pretty simple. We have Italians, Germans, Nords, etc at some of our Marine bases who train in our F35s and even the old AV8.
Patrick would be an obvious place for them to stop, stay overnight, and fly back out the next day. The plane likely has either military from the UK coming over to train, is dropping something off from the UK, or is picking something up for us. It could also be as simple as the pilot needs x amount of flying hours so they came here and will fly back in a day or 2.
In my past business travel days I've actually taken a flight from Texas to Seattle, had lunch, and flown back so I could get enough airline miles to keep my status.
C17 is Military transport. Ruling out that it is NATO equipment being sent to USA, seeing as the flow of materiel is in the wrong direction, my bet is that the plane is transporting new recruit 'Ukrainians' who are to receive basic training.
this, on the basis that Ukraine needs 40 000 new recruits a month to keep up with the Russian recruitment-rate, and that any conglomeration of troops in the Ukraine gets spotted and bombed to smithereens, so new recruits must be transported and trained in the West.
Its the Crabfats! Checking out some 5 star hotels with golf courses attached for some ground crews to stay in, to see if they come up to RAF standards of accomodation and cuisine.
It's called training. We train allies.

Looks like they landed now in Alburquerque, New Mexico at Kirkland AFB.
Dropping off a prisoner(s) bound for GITMO?
