The Intelligence Community gained massive power after WWII. It's grown like a cancer on our nation for decades.
The #1 evil in the world for most of that time was Russia and the entire Cold War dynamic. Every war was an effort to "stop communism" from spreading. This is also when the CIA developed the Color Revolution techniques to take down dictators and decide who wins and loses elections worldwide.
The IC has always needed a Boogeyman to justify its existence. If the world was truly safe, who would need massive defense budgets and intrusive intelligence agencies?
