Panera Bread exempt from California’s $20 minimum wage law after owner donated to Gov. Newsom: report
Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a law exempting Panera Bread from a new $20-an-hour minimum wage hike for fast food chains after the owner of several of the chain’s locations donated to his campaign…
Makes sense to me. If you're heading towards a bread lines economy, you'll want to keep your bread selling monopolies happy.
Coming soon: McBread at all participating McDonald's locations.
They can't... only places that were making bread before 2023 get the benefit
In America, “donations” are not bribes, right?
Let’s figure out which taxes aren’t extortion next.
But who's gonna want to work for them? They can go down the road and be guaranteed a raise. Lol
Owner must be one of his biggest donors.
Yep, Greg Flynn, big Newsom donor
You know what the minimum wage is in Alabama? $8 an hour. When I was a teenager and young adult it was $3.50 an hour in Florida where I grew up, I'm in my 50's now.
Those wages are unlivable in the modern day, 40k per year is poverty line in california
I'm sorry I stated our minimum wage rate wrong. Actually, Alabama doesn't have a minimum wage rate, it adopts the federal minimum rate. So, Alabama's state minimum wage rate is $7.25 per hour.

There are other places that will pay more (like $10 - $12 an hour for new hires) but $7.25 is the minimum wage here. My daughter is getting into the beauty industry and was just hired with the $8 an hour. She will probably not be getting much if any commission or tips for awhile until she actually starts working on hair.
Her last few jobs, her wage was more in the $10 - $12 range, but she needs to get her foot in the salon doors, and it isn't always easy to do.
Even at $10 -$12 an hour, you can't live off of that these days. She's still at home with us and she is in her 20's. We are hoping after she finishes school and gets her feet wet in the industry, she will be able to start making more money to fully support herself. 🤞
She should be a wife, not working every day she isn't pregnant is a day wasted.
Well, if there was a good man out there around her age that would actually stick around, have a good job and treat her right, treat her like she should be treated... then she would like to get married and have a family. But until then, she has to do what she has to do.
I told her I want her to have a career/craft that she could fall on whenever she may need to if she did get married and have a family. I never had that, I don't have anything that I'm particularly great at, that I could do now that I'm older and the kids all grown up. I have some disabilities that make it to where no one would hire me, because I couldn't be dependable because of those disabilities. Wish I had some craft/hobby that I was good enough at to keep me busy and make a little money.
Give them Bread and puppets.
anyone old enough to remember bar and grills? when places were getting their licenses to sell alcohol after prohibition, some municipalities required bars to serve food as well as alcohol. i remember hearing stories of brick sandwiches on the bar while people drank. one story I remember was a guy came in and ordered a sandwich and ate it. all the other patrons were shocked and the bartender was pissed. when he asked what was wrong, a customer explained that that was the only sandwich in the joint, and after it was gone, they couldnt legally sell booze until the bar got another sandwich. all I see happening in cali now is all restaurants will be serving bread to avoid paying minimum wage. well done, newscum.
