The fact you aren't already due to their greed and horrible price gouging is sad already. I paid less than 300 bucks for a new in box last-years flagship Motorola with a Snapdragon 8 processor, 8K camera, and a half terabyte of storage. Paying over 3 times that for the name Apple is just ridiculous.
A few years back I bought my husband a phone attachment that was funny as hell. Remember the part of the landline that you picked up and returned to the cradle? It attached to your cell phone in the headphone jack. My kids were fascinated with it.
Ask anyone that is a millennial or younger what a rotary-dial was, or what "pulse" was vs "touch tone". Then tell them you used to have to pay extra per phone in your house, and pay extra if you used touch tone instead of pulse. Maybe save the "party line" talk for another time. Too much at one time will shut their brains down.

I haven’t bought a new iPhone in years. I don’t care anything about their phones after iPhone 6 and that’s where I’ve stayed
I have never bought a smart phone. Never have and I never will. If I have to I will buy a flip phone from quik trip and add minutes.
My phone has a rotary dial 😉
On my candlestick, you jiggle the switchhook a couple times and say, "Hello Sara, would you connect me?"
