Seems like most people conflate treason with rebellion and sedition which are different things.
Treason is helping an enemy foreign power against your own country whereas rebellion is throwing off the government.
Signers were Rebels not Traitors. Allying with France though could have been seen as treason but would have applied to those making the alliance which is subset of the rebels.
