The Al Smith dinner was actually started in “honor” of Al Smith, who had grown up in overtly before coming to work for Tammany Hall (see “Gangs of New York”) and working tirelessly to “blend Catholicism with Americanism”. Not a good quote. The dinner was initiated by “Francis Spell man”. Also not a good quote. Both presidential candidates typically meet here in cordiality as a last stop prior to the election. How did that start as a tradition? Tammany much?
