Elon - The more that is spent, the worse it gets, because the money doesn’t go to the homeless, it goes to the hundreds of “charities” that then treat the homeless as sources of revenue. (twitter.com)

Ironically a major problem with many of the Private Charities that are run like Businesses. They aren’t financially incentivized to actually solve anything. Because their income and Jobs are reliant on these problems existing. And if they can’t find problems they’ll make them.

Yeah. Disappointing too.

I will always choose to be generous in person rather than allow an organization to manage my money for them.

I choose to do neither. Giving money to a homeless person all but guarantees it will go to perpetuate a drug addiction and, at the very best, encourages them to continue panhandling, which is a stain on society any way you slice it.

These people need real help. Not money handed to them. Charities and our government fail to provide it. It's not my job to provide it. Giving them $20 isn't going to provide it. So I do nothing except offer support to anyone who genuinely appears to have passion and a real plan to make change.

A) I don't give money to homeless people, I donate food and books locally that goes towards kids. In my area, the panhandlers are known for rotating in and out at someone's behest who sits above them all.

B) There are ways to fix the homeless issue, but it is a very complex and multifaceted issue that cannot even begin to be approached until we stop sending all of our cash to other countries and bleeding the rest of it to illegals, DEI agendas, etc.

I always give them $100, in hopes that they go buy the really good shit and overdose, which solves the problem permanently for everyone.

If panhandling doesn't pay they'll just start killing, better to keep them panhandling imo.

I don't agree. The drugs they end up getting make them more aggressive to begin with.

Locking them up is retarded too. The problem can't be fixed in the present state of the country, but just throwing money at them doesn't do anything either.

For being poor?

permalink parent save report block reply
▲ 1 ▼

It's more than that. Despite what many liberals will say, it takes an incredibly large number of bad decisions to end up panhandling on the street. You have to be alienated from your family and friends, and have exhausted every resource you could tap into. That does not happen overnight.

Either you are mentally ill, and thus should be locked up to be treated, or you are willfully a drain on society, and you should be locked up for that.

Not for being "poor." But for refusing to do even the bare minimum.

Family dies, friends leave(assuming you had any to begin with) and men have basically no resources to rely on, I fully expect to end up homeless in the future.

Either you are mentally ill, and thus should be locked up to be treated, or you are willfully a drain on society, and you should be locked up for that.

Why should a man not be a drain on a society that has denied us everything?

AND one of THE BIGGEST IS: CATHOLIC CHARITIES!!!!!

I used to give to that organization and EVERY year they asked for money from all the parishes...So far this year I haven't seen anything at church except a blip in the bulletin...Wonder if they have learned their lesson?

An organization can ONLY go to the well so often before it dries up!!!

Great article. How Catholic Charities Lost it's Soul https://www.city-journal.org/article/how-catholic-charities-lost-its-soul

...you would think that Catholic Charities USA would be a perfect model to emulate, getting the poor into the mainstream by emphasizing moral values and ethical conduct. But no: rather than trying to promote traditional values and God-fearing behavior, Catholic Charities—and the same could be said about the Association of Jewish Family and Children's Agencies or the Lutheran Services in America—has become over the last three decades an arm of the welfare state, with 65 percent of its $2.3 billion annual budget now flowing from government sources and little that is explicitly religious, or even values-laden...Far from being a model for reforming today's welfare-state approach to helping the poor, Catholic Charities USA is one of the nation's most powerful advocates for outworn welfare-state ideas, especially the idea that social and economic forces over which the individual has no control, rather than his own attitudes and behavior, are the reason for poverty...

This is the incentive structure for GOVERNMENT AND GOVERNMENT-FED ORGANIZATIONS GENERALLY: If you SOLVE THE PROBLEM you are funded for, your money disappears. If you KEEP THE PROBLEM GOING, you get to keep your funding.

Government and government-fed incentives are upside down; the OPPOSITE of those in the Free Market.

It works the same way in the private industry, if anything government funding is less likely to disappear for a solved problem because theres no incentive to stop paying/

I can't argue with that, newdaynewname4 -- we still pay taxes allegedly for expanding access to electricity and phone service, despite those issues being solved long ago. Once government program starts, it tends to go on forever.

But I will say that when the problem visibly persists, that tends to INCREASE the money being given to the gov't and private groups "working on the problem", as with cancer, homelessness, "poverty", and so on.

as a homeless person... all these shelters tout success stories where people stayed there for a few months, and then got off the street.

but in the last few years, they've all adopted 1-month limits.

this is while "safe use sites" and "harm reduction supplies" increase exponentially.

all i'm saying is, it's very difficult to break the cycle of homelessness when you have to move every month. really seems like these places just want to keep their client count steady.

Reminds me of an article I read some years ago that certain police precincts allow rampant crime to justify budget increases! Not saying this is the reality everywhere but the reasoning makes sense!

Same applies to sending money to foreign countries - it never reaches the people for humanitarian purposes - too many pockets and purses to line on its way down.

I donate my time and money to a local faith based food bank and distribution program. I can see where my efforts are going.
