It's because the magnetosphere has seriously weakened. This 7-minute video explains the connection with the weakened magnetosphere, CME's from the sun, aurora borealis, and hurricanes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f_e8KWnmARY
This was caused by a coronal mass injection from the sun. This is at the peak of their 11 year cycles. This aurora was from the biggest mass injection from the sun that has ever been recorded. All auroras are from mass ejections from the sun including the ones here in Canada and in Norway etc. That is where they come from. It has always been that way. The reason you see them outside the normal areas now is because the sun is at the highest peak of mass injections which occurs every 11 years, and this high cycle is the biggest that has ever been recorded.
I’m in NC east of I95, I saw the same colors as the photos in the post. I could only view a slight pinkish hue through my phone camera. When I took a photo it was just like photos posted here. I saw a map and only upper USA & Canada could see with the naked eye. Either way I’m very grateful I saw it. My grandad used to tell me about the Northern Lights when I was a kid. He probably heard about them on the radio, nothing like this on TV in the 70s or before. He sparked my interest in looking at the shapes in clouds and the beautiful colors of Northern lights. I’ve been to many beautiful natural places in USA, this was in my top five.
I'm about 12 miles south of Detroit and had to look NORRH TOWARD THE CITY/LIGHT POLLUTION and could STILL see them well enough to get some great pictures!
I noticed that the moon appeared weirdly yellow last night and wondered why. About an hour later my friends were messaging that the Northern Lights were visible again (happened in April too).
At my location the moon was in the southern sky. This was in the northern sky. Eventually the moon was most likely in view with the lights. I didn’t stay up that late. It would have been pretty cool. This time of year the full moon is usually bright orange and so beautiful.

Eyes open - no fear.
Yes! It's gorgeous and visible down here in Texas! ✨
I guess I’m too far south to enjoy it. ☹️
Are you in Texas also Boonies?
Yep, south of Houston
Thanks Fren.
The local soccer team chat was exploding with comments and photos as nearly nobody in the area knew this was happening including my family.

Carrington event - Cuba saw auroras.
On top of the cell phone cameras are amplifying the auroras effect
The lights were extremely red where I was at too, Northern Central US. Crazy colors.
Natural phenomenon. Once per the 50 years solar event.
