Personally speaking it has made me uncomfortable at times, and I have found myself wanting to run back to the arms I know.
When I was in 9th grade a girl from the deep south started her first day of school in the far north. I wanted to make her feel welcome and befriended her right away. She was white like me, but we both judged each other. We were at times uncomfortable with each other. How we spoke, what we ate, how we dressed. All so different. I was Presbyterian and she was southern Baptist. Worlds and cultures apart. We only shared white skin, same sex, and same age.
You find the same among rural versus urban. Maybe 15 miles apart but different worlds, different manners of dress, different tastes.
Have I judged people my whole life? Of course! Not in a racist judgement, but a cultural judgement. Am I more comfortable with what I know and where I feel I belong. Yes. Emphatically so. As they are also.
Our melting pot has worked for 250 years because the one thread that joins us together is being An American or wanting to be American more than bringing the old world with them.
The "funny" thing (and by "funny" I mean "not funny at all") is that I was raised the same as OP. Never was something that even entered my mind when interacting with anyone of a different race.
But then the Leftist worldview made its first intrusion into my life. I was 25 at the time (25 years ago exactly), had a good job as the lead network and server administrator for a 80-person subsidiary of a larger company.
We were called to the home office for a week of corporate training. It was my very first exposure to the PC world. It was 40 hours of mind programming about sensitivity to anyone who could possibly be different from you and all the horrible things that could happen if you screwed up.
I was young and this was a very new thing in the culture. I went from looking at everyone as the same to hyper-aware of the race and gender of everyone I interacted with because I was worried about being pulled into the HR office and/or losing my job. It took me years to shrug off that bullshit and get back to who I was; someone that treated everyone based on their behavior and quality.
Obviously, that kind of bullshit has evolved into something far more cancerous now, but it's an example of how inherently racist both Democrats and critical race theory are. By 2007, we were heading towards a pretty good place in terms of race relations in this country. Things were far from perfect, but my generation (Gen X) just didn't give a shit about anyone's race or sexuality.
Then we had 8 years of Obama, who made it a point of creating as much racial division as possible.
And now we're in a position to take back the culture, end this racist nonsense and get back to just human beings. We've got a big opportunity in front of us.
