Welcome to General Chat - GAW Community Area
This General Chat area started off as a place for people to talk about things that are off topic, however it has quickly evolved into a community and has become an integral part of the GAW experience for many of us.
Based on its evolving needs and plenty of user feedback, we are trying to bring some order and institute some rules. Please make sure you read these rules and participate in the spirit of this community.
Rules for General Chat
-
Be respectful to each other. This is of utmost importance, and comments may be removed if deemed not respectful.
-
Avoid long drawn out arguments. This should be a place to relax, not to waste your time needlessly.
-
Personal anecdotes, puzzles, cute pics/clips - everything welcome
-
Please do not spam at the top level. If you have a lot to post each day, try and post them all together in one top level comment
-
Try keep things light. If you are bringing in deep stuff, try not to go overboard.
-
Things that are clearly on-topic for this board should be posted as a separate post and not here (except if you are new and still getting the feel of this place)
-
If you find people violating these rules, deport them rather than start a argument here.
-
Feel free to give feedback as these rules are expected to keep evolving
In short, imagine this thread to be a local community hall where we all gather and chat daily. Please be respectful to others in the same way
Rules For the rest of the Site also accessible on the sidebar.

My husband and I did/tried something we hadn't done in 20 years. Last night we went to the Senior Center to a Christmas Dance. We thought that if we did this on a monthly basis (they have a dance every month) that it would keep our joints limber and perhaps help us with our weight. One dance and my hip started hurting. Kek! Other people out there on the floor that were our age or older were 'cutting a rug' like there was no tomorrow. One woman had a bent leg at the knee and she didn't let it stop her.
Anyway, the music and the Band was great. The steel guitar set it off. They were all very good with their instruments and voices. They are called 'Country Twang' and I believe we will be going back. Going to have to practice some line dances before we go again. Anyway, they played a lot of the Christmas music themes. Songs like

The hardest part is not pushing as hard...
You wanna - the spirit is willing but the bod isn't as compliant
Don't let that stop you from doing it again...
Stretching is really important... before and after
That's what I told my husband. I told him we must 'practice' up a bit before we go to limber our joints. The inflammation is killing us. 20 years ago this would not have been hard to do, but we all age. I had my doctors appointment Thursday and she said I was good to go for 6 months. I lost 22 lbs which made her happy as well as myself. My blood pressure is normal most of the time. So I thought, "what the heck, I'll see if I can con my husband into us trying out the dances they have at the Senior Center." He thinks it's a good idea as he too has lost quite a bit of weight. Not that we are grossly obese, but when your middle is suffering from 'dunlop' problems, it's time to do something, KEK!
A simple thing fren, can be done every day for free. Go barefoot on the earth for 2 min. Amazing for inflammation and pain. If you enjoy, do it more often!
I used to go barefoot outside up to the age of 30's. Then I don't know why I quit. If it wasn't cold outside, I'd go do it now. Thank you. I will keep it in mind.
Some foods can cause inflammation. There’s many herbs that will help. People swear by turmeric, it doesn’t do anything for me. I find more relief from moringa and green tea. Ginger is really good, I love ginger lemon tea.
Thanks. I'm willing to try anything at this point.
That's great - congratulations
I dropped about 30# myself just cutting out sweet coffees...
The downside is that now, all my well worn in clothes that "have my stink on them" don't fit anymore & I've had to add 3 more holes to tighten my belt...
I'm praying nobody dies or gets married anytime soon... It's like a 7 year old wearing Dad's suit! LoL 😂
Good jeans that fit are hard to find... but you know that already 😉
I’m dying laughing at this. My husband lost about fifty pounds and after my constant nagging he found wrangler’s at Roses for 15. I’m about 40 pounds down the jeans I bought in September and falling down after a couple hours wear. Going to get a belt, hate em but I’m not buying new jeans and be too big by spring. Clothes just aren’t made like they were twenty years ago. I want real denim with out stretching. Guess when I’m at my goal weight I’ll buy vintage jeans. I’m feel but still prefer vintage men’s Levi’s over most jeans. I have had a dress in the closet for three years in case of funeral or death. It will be donated because it’s too big. Guess I gotta get something else now.
I know what you mean. I worked from 4 PM to 4 AM 6 days a week for 10 years. I don't know how I did it. There wasn't much time to eat a full meal except for Sundays. But I stayed a healthy 125 lbs. for all that time. In 2009 I lost my job along with most factories here in America due to the Hedge Funds and Banking Systems failures when Obama came into office. So I stayed home and went to college. While at home, my husband who is half Italian and German started cooking for me. Well let me tell you... Pasta is good but extremely fattening and for a woman who hasn't eaten much in 10 years, you'd better believe I ate it. Then once I started cooking again, I continued the same food courses. Before long, I had ballooned to an amount that I know was/is unhealthy. I never hit 200 lbs. Praise the Lord, but if I kept on eating in this manner, it wouldn't have been long.
Then my Doctor withheld my bloodwork from December 2023 until June 2024 stating that I was borderline diabetic. THAT'S WHAT WOKE ME UP. My husband needed to lose some weight too, so we joined this fight together. We cut out a lot of the breads, pastas and pastries. We cut out the high-processed foods like potato chips, salami, bologna, summer sausages, etc. We eat a meat/protein with lots of veggies on our plates at dinner. Throughout the day, I basically eat a couple of boiled eggs for breakfast or an oatmeal. This usually holds me over until dinner. If not, I munch on about 6 whole wheat flavored crackers. This has helped me keep a calorie deficit to lose weight. So far it is working.
Good luck on finding you some new clothes. I can hardly wait to replace mine.
Well that got me up and dancing this morning. I’ve found if I just dance throughout the day it gets my heart pumping. It’s one of the top exercises. Now I need a cup of coffee ❤️😂🎄
Glad you liked it. They played several good ones. The woman singer even sang the Brenda Lee song 'Rockin' around the Christmas tree' and I declare it sounded just like her.
That is my favorite secular Christmas song. I love Brenda Lee anyway. That’s how I get a lot of my exercise if I have music playing at home. A fast one comes on and I’m bouncing around. Good thing I live alone. The dogs and cat are used to it. 😂
Great exercise. I used to have the time to dance, ride my stationary bike, get on a treadmill, and exercise a bit. But somehow things got messed up and threw my regimen off track.
That's awesome!
That sounds like fun. I love the steel guitar. I can spot it in a song and have zero musical talent. It’s so good hearing it in a live band. Even if you don’t dance a lot it’s still fun to hear the music and be around other people. Make sure you are wearing shoes with good support. I love my cowboy boots but they don’t love me. You can get lidocaine patches over the counter now. They really help numb the pain. If you are going out at night put one on in the morning and by dance time you will be set. Double check side effects, I don’t have an issue but guess it’s possible.
Thanks. I have used these before.
😊
Mary...I am so proud of you for what you have done to improve your health. Someone has recommended GNC's TriFlex after much improvement with inflammation. I haven't used it yet but I have used all the supplements it contains at different times with success. It contains MSM, Glucosamine/Chondroitin Hyaluronic Acid and Boswellia. I am going to give it a try when I use up the joint supplement I am now using. I hope you have fun at your dances...I can't think of anything more fun! The exercise will be great!
Thanks Tweety. We are hoping this will help us limber up a bit so that we're not so idle. I have this thing where when my husband and I go shopping, I have to hold to the cart. I could use one of those ride-on carts, but that would make me more idle. So he pushes while we shop and I hold to it to keep from stumbling. I don't do this much at home, but it's something about large areas that cause my hip and knee to act up.
