What I know about Greenland is mostly that the reason why there was a Viking settlement there was not all due to Erik the Red lying about the place, it really was more hospitable a thousand years ago, the climate was warmer, but they abandoned their settlement when the Little Ice Age got going (from around 1300 to 1850) and the glaciers started to expand again.
As far as I remember several of their farms, remains of buildings and other archeological finds, have been found in places where the glaciers have retreated again now. As we are starting to get back to what the climate was like before the Little Ice Age... with luck maybe even back to the climate of the Atlantic Warm period, when the average temperatures were possibly even about two degrees warmer than today (those cavemen must have been burning a lot of wood to get enough CO2 into the air to get that climate, as that was back around 8000 to 5000 before Christ :D ).
So Basically. Greenland suffers from most of the problems you come to expect of a small and isolated population who live in a place that’s essentially the worst of Siberia more often than not.
And seems to have created its own pile of folklore and spooky happenings.
If the deal to buy Greenland goes through and isn’t just a meme. I’d imagine Greenland turning into essentially a version of West Virginia and to a lesser extent the Appalachians as a whole. A plethora of strange happenings and spooky sightings. Along with creepy legends and a superstitious people.
According to the article it's actually the constant sun in the summer that causes a rise in suicide rate, it's suspected due to insomnia caused by the sunlit nights.
There have been stories circulating for years about DUMBS being built in Greenland and I've seen a few stories with pictures of the ice excavations that looked 100's of feet deep. No idea the validity, just something to add to the puzzle.
The Pituffik Space Base (formerly called Thule Air Base) in Greenland is officially acknowledged by the U.S. military. But I suspect there could easily be other hidden facilities too.
The author, Tim Urban, is hilarious.
Seriously, though, Trump must have a very good reason to want to claim Greenland. Something along the lines of national security or cleaning out evil, I'm thinking.
I think that is part of it - Greenland has a lot of the rare earth elements that we currently depend on China to sell us. And quite possibly it's foreseeable that they will refuse to sell them to us in the future.
As important as it could be to have Greenland, I think it’s a shame that we would take hold of it and ruin it. These people live up there and happy simple lives. Yes they’re difficult but they’re just living their lives day-to-day, some villages have no cell phones no TVs, and they’re happy. We’re gonna show up with a bunch of trucks and build roads from town to town, and just cause a whole bunch of problems for these people. I think it’s sad. I read the entire article, and the people that live in that town of 46 people are actually enjoying their live lives.
"There are apparently things called qivitoqs in Greenland, that multiple people made sure to tell me about. The legend says that they’re half-dead, half-alive people with the strength of an animal who roam the land at night. One guy told me that they’re actually a real thing—that they’re real people who were either abused when they were younger and ran away or who were exiled from their village, and they spend their lives alone in the wilderness fending for themselves. Those who survive end up very strong, wanting revenge, and are often not in their right mind, and they’re known to reappear in a village after years away and murder people. He said sometimes people will see footprints in the snow outside their isolated home when they know no one in their family had walked there."
Danish children aren’t told that Santa lives in the North Pole. They’re told he lives in Greenland. The Danish are the only parents in the Christian world not lying to their children

Not Appalachia, Greenland will just be East Alaska.

the cold and dark aren't ideal for positive mental health

Sounds like a very mysterious place. I always wanted to visit Greenland, but after reading about the murder rate…now I’m not so sure.
Very funny, informative story of Greenland written by a young world traveler with photos and 30 second videos of some of the odder sights and sounds.

Minerals perhaps

Trump is smart and knowledgeable. And he's probably looking a century into the future.
I think I read that he wants it for a military base, because of its strategic location.
Thanks for posting this… fascinating. Most disturbing that he ran across drawings of what must be an abused sad girl. No explanation.
You're welcome.
The part about the girl is very sad. Strange that her drawings were left for him to see.
Some people are really drawn to these types of desolate places. I'd love to spend some years there.

Greenland is freaking huge!!! Massive!!!!

One of my university professors, who earned his doctorate in Greenland, always told us that "Iceland is green, and Greenland is ice."
SO ALL I HEARD WAS THEY HAVE SOME TYPE OF PROBLEM SELLING THEIR FISH TO THIRD PARTIES?
