Welcome to General Chat - GAW Community Area
This General Chat area started off as a place for people to talk about things that are off topic, however it has quickly evolved into a community and has become an integral part of the GAW experience for many of us.
Based on its evolving needs and plenty of user feedback, we are trying to bring some order and institute some rules. Please make sure you read these rules and participate in the spirit of this community.
Rules for General Chat
-
Be respectful to each other. This is of utmost importance, and comments may be removed if deemed not respectful.
-
Avoid long drawn out arguments. This should be a place to relax, not to waste your time needlessly.
-
Personal anecdotes, puzzles, cute pics/clips - everything welcome
-
Please do not spam at the top level. If you have a lot to post each day, try and post them all together in one top level comment
-
Try keep things light. If you are bringing in deep stuff, try not to go overboard.
-
Things that are clearly on-topic for this board should be posted as a separate post and not here (except if you are new and still getting the feel of this place)
-
If you find people violating these rules, deport them rather than start a argument here.
-
Feel free to give feedback as these rules are expected to keep evolving
In short, imagine this thread to be a local community hall where we all gather and chat daily. Please be respectful to others in the same way
Rules For the rest of the Site also accessible on the sidebar.

Movie suggestions, please! Rack em up. As many as you care to list. Doesn't matter how old or obscure they might be. I just want to have a list of possibilities. And I'm talking about regular movies - not Q related. Thank you.
The Quiet Earth
Silent Running
An American Werewolf in London
Saturday the 14th
Gone With the Wind
The Thin Man Series
The Thing (Kurt Russell)
The Bishop's Wife (Cary Grant, David Niven)
Creepshow (asshole Stephen King not withstanding)
2 French Farces (watch in the original French with subtitles):
La Cage Aux Folles
My New Partner (also called Le Cop, is a 1984 French comedy film directed by Claude Zidi that stars Philippe Noiret and Thierry Lhermitte.)
Speaking of French, if you want to really be creeped out there's,
The City Of Lost Children with asshole Ron Perlman
There's the quietly beautiful:
Windwalker
For the strange, a couple of cult classics:
Children Shouldn't Play With Dead Things
Eating Raoul (with Robert Beltran, Chakotay STVoyager)
Any early Jackie Chan comedy kung fu. I don't remember which one, but he was dressed as a woman and beat up a guy with his fake boobs, hilarious!
Cowboys & Aliens
Oh, God (George Burns, John Denver)
The Odd Couple (Walter Matthau, Jack Lemmon)
The Snake Pit with Olivia DeHavilland
Manhattan Melodrama, (Clark Gable, William Powell)
Rebecca (a 1940 Hitchcock classic)
Dr. Strangelove
Day of the Dolphin (George C. Scott)
Logan's Run
I know I'm forgetting a bunch and could probably go on and on and on and on....., I like movies of a lot of different genres, especially that which is off the beaten path.
P.S. Rather than any of the movies, although the original, The Haunting, with Julie Harris wasn't bad, I'd recommend reading, The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson.
P.S.S.
Becket with Peter O'Toole and Richard Burton
Speaking of Peter:
My Favorite Year.
OK, I'll stop now.... 😄
Here's some of my favorites:
Casablanca - directed by Michael Curtiz
White Christmas - directed by Michael Curtiz
The Quiet Man - John Ford's love letter to Ireland✨
The Day The Earth Stood Still - original only!
The Longest Day
Rebecca
To Catch A Thief
The Hunt For Red October
The Right Stuff
Blazing Saddles
Young Frankenstein
The Lion In Winter
...to name a few
Thank you, Joys1Daughter! Appreciate the suggestions.
You're welcome gobby! I don't watch scary films .. reality is frightening enough!
Ha! So true, sadly.
Oh yeah, excellent choices.
Watch The Quiet Man every St. Patrick's Day.
The Day the Earth Stood Still has to be the original, not the remake. IMO, remakes usually suck.
Although made a little later, I would have to add,
The Crack in the World.
We agree on Rebecca.
Gotta love Cary. He did another great Hitchcock with
North By Northwest.
Loved everything from Mel Brooks!
Looks like we both have great taste in movies! 😁
Yes and love...
Arsenic and Old Lace
Bringing Up Baby
And Fred Astaire, Gene Kelly
The Thin Man Series
Ah, yes, Fred solo and with myriad partners. 🕺💃
Gene Kelly, a bit different style, but just as great. 🎶💦☔
Oh.. my... goodness! Thank you fren. (Scribbling furiously.) And btw, there was no need for you to stop! Kek.
Ok, you asked for it, gobby! 😄
Hamlet - Mel Gibson
An excellent animated apocalypse:
When the Wind Blows - music by Roger Waters
Mr. Peabody and the Mermaid - William Powell, Ann Blyth
Speaking of (pun):
Blithe Spirit with Rex Harrison
Tales from the Hood
The Cat and the Canary 1927 silent film
Cary Grant comedies:
I Was a Male War Bride w/ Ann Sheridan
Bringing Up Baby w/ Katherine Hepburn
Arsenic and Old Lace (one of my favorites)
The Topper series w/ Constance Bennett, Roland Young and Billie Burke, (Glenda the good wtch from Wizard of Oz)
Another French farce:
Mama, There's A Man in Your Bed (original title 'Romuald et Juliette) 'strives to break all the rules', so some material may or may not offend you. I'm offended by nothing, so I can laugh at everything!
Being an Edgar Allan Poe and Vincent Price fan, I would be remiss not to mention the eight Poe adaptations he did, (along with the bevy of Vince's other works).
He also did some funny stuff with the great Peter Lorre:
Tales of Terror - '62
The Comedy of Terrors - '63
Almost any Marx Brothers movie, been a fan all my life.
My Little Chickadee w/ Mae West and W. C. Fields. So funny hearing them say each other's tag line.
Silver Bullet w/goofy Gary Busey
Silver Streak w/Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor
Speaking of Gene, there's the quirky
The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes Smarter Brother - Do you have a brother? Yes. And his name? S**** L***! <----spoiler
I know there's more, but I'm old and starting to draw blanks! 😂
What I've mentioned so far, plus whatever you might search for on top of it, should keep you busy for awhile. Enjoy!
Oh goodness! This will keep me busy for a while. A thousand thank yous. And yes, I have seen a few you mentioned, but not many. Looking forward to checking these out.
P.S. thank you for mentioning the years because one thing Hollywood loves to do is remake movies and sometimes there are a number of movies under the same name.
I tried to give enough info so you would know which versions I was listing.
I believe most remakes are terrible. The only one I can think of that, for me, wasn't, is The Thing (From Another World).
I thought the '51 original was kind of hokey, (I was a cynical kid, didn't really like many of the 'monster movies' of that era), but RIP James Arness, you were great as Matt Dillon.
However, the '82 Kurt Russell one scared the pants off me!
Edit: BTW, both were based on the story, Who Goes There, by John W. Campbell.
Bedtime for Bonzo (Ronald Reagan, 1951), Chariots of Fire (I like the celebration of the 2 Olympic runners, how they competed, and no woke DEI opening ceremonies). Master and Commander, Atlas Shrugged: Part III: Who is John Galt, Atlas Shrugged Part II: the Strike, and Pt. I (2011)
Thank you, fren!
I would make an EO that all flags of the USA sold in the USA have to be made in the USA.
Tarrifs will slowly wipe out cheap foreign crap, esp Chinese, from the market

I think it would be fun if potus releases what was on the cards at “poppy” bush funeral.
Please, Please, PLEASE!!
I know they are trying to give the pedos on Epstein’s list the max pain, but I’m ready to see that list! Let’s Go!!!!
The top news in several newsletters I subscribe to is about the 're-awakening' of anti-Semitism, especially in the US. I have found that when this is the news, Israel is on the verge of committing some heinous act on the people in Gaza. Be on the lookout for that as Hamas runs out of hostages to hand over. I just hate being manipulated, and the news is just another means of manipulation on a grand scale.
Right now the real target is China and that requires a lot of manoeuvres in Middle East and in Ukraine since China has deep hands in both places.
Until China, Israel is an ally. After that “Saving Israel for last”

Anyone else feel that GAW has transformed into an annex of X (twitter) and tik tok? I have lurked for some time.Check for yourself if needed. It’s what we all used to do. I sometimes posted but didn’t want to get in to the whole social credit scoring thing to earn a Pepe. I like SAUCE. I need SAUCE! Can we somehow get back to that? EVERY PARTY NEEDS SAUCE!
Charles Baudelaire (1821-1867)
Baudelaire can talk, one of the creepiest of the poets of that time, and its a high bar.
Wonderful and awful. I thought it was you, P. Better than his poetry. And, or course, true. Journaux! As Milei would say: Afuera!!!!
Charles Haddon Spurgeon February 21st — Evening Reading
"Understandest thou what thou readest?" — Acts 8:30
We should be abler teachers of others, and less liable to be carried about by every wind of doctrine, if we sought to have a more intelligent understanding of the Word of God. As the Holy Ghost, the Author of the Scriptures is He who alone can enlighten us rightly to understand them, we should constantly ask His teaching, and His guidance into all truth. When the prophet Daniel would interpret Nebuchadnezzar's dream, what did he do? He set himself to earnest prayer that God would open up the vision. The apostle John, in his vision at Patmos, saw a book sealed with seven seals which none was found worthy to open, or so much as to look upon. The book was afterwards opened by the Lion of the tribe of Judah, who had prevailed to open it; but it is written first-"I wept much." The tears of John, which were his liquid prayers, were, so far as he was concerned, the sacred keys by which the folded book was opened. Therefore, if, for your own and others' profiting, you desire to be "filled with the knowledge of God's will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding," remember that prayer is your best means of study: like Daniel, you shall understand the dream, and the interpretation thereof, when you have sought unto God; and like John you shall see the seven seals of precious truth unloosed, after you have wept much. Stones are not broken, except by an earnest use of the hammer; and the stone-breaker must go down on his knees. Use the hammer of diligence, and let the knee of prayer be exercised, and there is not a stony doctrine in revelation which is useful for you to understand, which will not fly into shivers under the exercise of prayer and faith. You may force your way through anything with the leverage of prayer. Thoughts and reasonings are like the steel wedges which give a hold upon truth; but prayer is the lever, the prise which forces open the iron chest of sacred mystery, that we may get the treasure hidden within.

Hebrews 4:14-16
14 Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. 15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. 16 Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
Just fyi, it's traditional to mention the book.
