I remember hearing that story when I was at Mt. Vernon. Because of the limited instruction, people wonder why Washington was chosen to lead the militia. They say he just wore a fancy uniform. They leave out that he was a hero in the French and Indian war. They also leave out how young Lafayette was. He was more like Washington’s son’s age would be if he had one.
Anyone notice that number (17) show up again 😏
I've read the story, but he tells it really good.
Very short video.
Interesting to read "The Life of George Washington" by John Marshall, Justice of the Supreme Court, a contemporary who had access to all of Washington's papers. It really amounts to a history of the French and Indian Wars, and the War of Independence, and the two terms of Washington's presidency. He was a seasoned fighter in the field and a wise general who had the confidence of the Continental Congress (indispensable in the face of its erratic support). Battle after battle. It gives some impression of the scale of the conflict and the bravery of the combatants, and the warcraft of both sides. But the years of presidency were eye-opening in that it showed the earliest malady of the Democratic Party (in later years, disguised by the name "Democratic-Republican Party") in its preference for sheer deficit spending, inflationary issuance of paper money, and fascination for the Jacobin side of the French Revolution. They have been a bad breed from the very beginning, and it was seen at the time.

I never heard it before. Thanks for posting it.
Wonderful reminder. Thank you.
I knew this but I also grew up on Washington’s land near Mt Vernon on Little Hunting Creek.
I grew up 1 mile outside Mt Vernon in Southwood. Pretty sure the whole area around there used to be his land. Had fond memories of visiting the old mill as a kid
