I guess we're still funding plenty of research in Australian universities, just not the universities that support the trooning. It's a start, but what else are we continuing to fund? So many millions of our tax dollars thrown all over the world.

The concept is not entirely corrupt. If the research is serving the interests or aims of the American government, then its legitimate for the US govt to fund that research. But NOT if it doesn't benefit American, the objectives and interests of the American people.
Or if it violates the American mandate. Which you know a lot of the research is going to be doing.
So why can't we do that right here? Employing Americans and spending the money locally?
Well, research (clinical, academic, etc) isn't just a matter of manufacturing. It's also usually free market. Someone has to want to do the research, particularly if its innovative areas.
Sometimes, it's just that people in X country are specializing in Y type of research.
To inspire or motivate people to do certain types of research, you normally would use grants of some form or description. Think Fauci and NHS.
Also, a LOT of American research organs (i.e. corporations, academic institutions like universities) have been corrupted.
Then again, if your objective is to fund anti-human (aka globalist) research, or to bankrupt the country you are supposed to be working for, then obviously funding overseas research can be corrupted to achieve those goals.
Anyway, the administration put a survey to the recipients, and used that to distinguish between what it considers legit researchers and bad, or bogus, researchers.
Anyway, I think its likely to just be a step in the process. Like reestablishing the manufacturing sector in the US, Maga Administration is going to want to re-establish or reignite American research operations.

The US government was funding various forms of research, which is a legitimate use of funds if the research directly benefits or serves the aims of the American government, to serve the American people.
But there's no way one can call a decision to NOT fund certain types of research as "interference in our independent research". If it's independent, then you don't need someone else's funding.
But you just know that the research that was being funded wasn't serving the American people. Probably doing research on how a mob of kangaroos respond to gender reassignment surgery, or such stupid stuff.
