They all haven't been receiving checks, necessarily.

Back in 2015, the SS started automatically halting checks of anyone over the age of 115 or older, until proof of life could be submitted.

The ones 115 and older are the ones that are still in the system because a death certificate was never given to the SS.

It doesn't mean that they were being sent checks all this time.

I'm sure DOGE will be looking to see if they were receiving checks, and if so, who was cashing them. Then they will prosecute them, I expect.

But the point is, just because their name is in the system doesn't mean they've been getting checks.

Yeah, illegals use stolen SSNs all the time. Mostly so they can get jobs.

But here's the thing that most people miss:

Illegals very rarely are getting money back from the numbers they steal. Can it happen? Sure, but I would guess it's very rare. Why am I guessing that? Because people tend to notice when they're not getting their SS each month. If they're too old and decrepit themselves to notice it, whoever is taking care of them (care facility, child, family member) would notice.

But not too many people notice when they're getting extra money paid into their account, such as when illegals use that number to get a job.

This is different from outright identity theft, where they steal the identity of someone (frequently someone already dead who won't notice weird things on their credit report) and get photo IDs, passports, credit cards, all that stuff.

What I'm talking about are all the day workers that just need a number so they can pretend to be legal and they can go do a drywall job for $20/hrs. The people hiring them don't care if it's their real ssn or not, just so they can pretend they were doing their due diligence in not hiring illegals.

They already do. Thousands of people get notices from the IRS when they pay their taxes that they did not claim all their income. That is usually how many people find out their SSN has been stolen. That then triggers an investigation by SSA to try track down the employer and the individual who actually did the work to see if they reported an incorrect SSN like one number off when it is legit. Rarely is the individual ever found. When I worked for SSA that was a job that I hated. We all know it was a total waste of time and effort because 99% of the mismatches had Hispanic names and were no longer working for the original employer that reported the wages.

That would take an entire division in SSA to do that, but they could trim the numbers down if they start with all the "back problem" cases. It's utterly amazing how many people are in so much pain that they can't work a job, but watch them doing home construction projects, or carrying heavy objects around without hurting their disability source. It never ceases to amaze me how they say can't lift anything beyond their coffee cup and that somehow translates into "I can't do a desk job."
