Well from what I heard.. take an ITALY MADE leather shoes as an example.
These shoes were made in China, then they were brought to Italy to be stamped, and then it's technically made in Italy. That's how brand names been getting away with it for a few decades now.
Even big names like Louis Vitton, Gucci, Prada.. made in China and transferred to Italy to sew in the brand name..this way they jumped a loop and could say assembled or made in Italy.
And the thing is US corporations been charging us citizens hundred of dollars for shoes and wear, making 900% profit, like Apple phones, so tariff shouldn't hurt these people.. they're just greedy fucks. SO now we know and we can get these expensive stuff directly from the source and pay only a fraction of the price and NOT BE AFFECTED BY THE TARIFF at all. Because it's all one shit show.
Italy has a major job crisis issue and has had for years. Italy also has outsourced most of its manufacturing. I'm sure neither of them are related in any way /s
Their standard of living is much lower.. food and utilities are very cheap and even phone bills don’t cost arm and a leg like in the US. Also nobody is forcing them to work there they did it. Donttrust everything u read in the media about China. They have better lives there than us
But my point we are able to manufacture Cheap locally but nobody wants to work hard for less profits because our system is so damn expensive plus all the regulations and tax. We want to make a fortune over a single sale here because that’s the american way.. work less for bigger pay.
I only agree with "Their standard of living is much lower" from your first paragraph. I've been to China 4 times and to Hong Kong 5 times (though not since China took them back).
Hong Kong was a thriving modern metro area with educated and friendly people. It felt safer than similar big cities in the US.
China - not so much. I visited Shanghai (multiple times) and Xian - one big city and one quite small. I did not get to Beijing so it is probably different, although Shanghai is gigantic and could be similar.
In China I saw a bunch of poor people working construction with little to no safety equipment. I saw one of those things that people stand on to wash windows on skyscrapers break down with a guy (with no hard hat) beating on the controls with a wrench to make it go again. Another guy (without a hard hat) was standing directly underneath about 10 floors below staring up to see what was wrong. When I blew my nose the kleenex turned black.
The office building where I was working (one of their biggest and well-known companies) still had the holes in the floor for toilets for everyone but executives - or foreign guests.
I went to visit a monastery. Granted - it was mid-winter. They had a large shallow ornamental fish pond. Rather than pulling the fish (looked like koi) out in the fall they left dozens in there to freeze. Like they froze while swimming, not upside-down to where they died first and floated - they looked like they flash-froze mid-swim.
They all seemed to treat everyone and everything perceived to be lower than them with contempt.
Don't forget that during the scamdemic they actually welded some people inside their buildings. As in - welded the gates and entrances shut.
You are right to say not to trust anything in the media about China, but everything out there talks about forced labor - especially with the muslim groups like the Uyghurs. I've seen videos of some of the working conditions they endure.
China is NOT good, and their people most definitely have it harder than we do - unless they are in the CCP. Even their military often end up with MREs that are rotten, or have infestations of worms, or don't have enough calories to sustain them in combat.
Perhaps. It wasn't that long ago that rat shack was still around. But their computers? No, other than perhaps a Color Computer. Most of those 1000 series machines were just bog-standard DOS machines with the PCjr graphics array and sound chip. No reason to keep them around when they became obsolete or broke, so they got recycled.
The serial numbers are assigned in Italy and then they can say Made in Italy as long as 20% is assembled or manufactured there.. it could very well be just an act of sewing in an extra piece
videos on Tik Tok started 2 days ago showing the chinese factories, the goods and how much the items cost
saw one today where everything in the factory store was 20 cent
as far as pricing, it shouldn't change. the nike's that cost 10 bucks and sell for 150 will now cost 25 bucks, but the equilibrium price is still 150, because 150 is the price where demand starts diminishing
The US govt. through congressional law or, maybe executive order, should require ALL products imported into the USA to publicly, and prominently label (or list) the manufacturing costs for all imported goods sold within the USA.
I bet the "free trade" narrative would look a whole lot different, real fast.
Think about clothes. In China they produce a man button down dress shirt for $1.00 but you pay $60.00 in the department store. Always wait for the 50% off sale. The store still makes100% over their cost.
I was just on a trip to Eastern Europe. Turkish clothing store had a clearance center there, you could buy decent quality men's shirts for $4 and pants for $5. Sometimes better than what I've seen for more than 10 times that in the States and Western Europe.
Overhead of brick and mortar store in the US is too high, I don't think I'd make enough profits. And this can likely be found on Amazon, unfortunately.
Was someone under the impression that these products WERE NOT made in China?

I wanna know how much a pair of Air Jordan's cost to produce.
probably 70 cents and they sewed parts of it locally so they can say it's made in the US.
Don't forget the human cost. Slave labor.

I agree with your second paragraph 100%.

Tandy would do that here. Bring a radio in from Hong Kong, solder a wire on, boom! Made in USA and lining the shelves of your nearest Rat Shack.
I bet millennials have never seen a Tandy (1000SL), and Gen Z may not have ever seen a Radio Shack or a Tandy.

They're not just "stamped" - they're tagged with a serial number.
"Real" LV bags all have a serial number... knock offs don't.
The serial numbers are assigned in Italy and then they can say Made in Italy as long as 20% is assembled or manufactured there.. it could very well be just an act of sewing in an extra piece
Yup...see?
It's not just Americans selling out the next generation by having everything made with child/slave labor to keep margins up.
Feel any better now?
Me neither.
Italy brought the Chinese into Italy to work the clothing and shoe factories.
My thoughts exactly....

Yep, and I was always the sucker who bought them.
I was just on a trip to Eastern Europe. Turkish clothing store had a clearance center there, you could buy decent quality men's shirts for $4 and pants for $5. Sometimes better than what I've seen for more than 10 times that in the States and Western Europe.
You should find suppliers and open a store in the US and sell the shirts for $15 each. Give the big department stores some competition.
Overhead of brick and mortar store in the US is too high, I don't think I'd make enough profits. And this can likely be found on Amazon, unfortunately.
My buddy had a store and would buy a dozen sunglasses for a dollar.
and sell for $20-$50 each, and Americans thought they were cheap until we started paying too much for gas and utilities
exploitation of labor and the environment
Do Milwaukee and DeWalt... yanno "just for fun" 😁
This isn’t going to go away.
A business expense isn’t only the cost of goods sold!!
I wish people would stop saying “hey.. it only cost them 1 dollar to make it. Why are they charging 10”!
Because a business has to pay for liabilities on their balance sheet.
They have to pay administrative, marketing and advertising fees.
They have to pay taxes: They have to pay for research expenses. They have to reinvest their money into long term fixed assets.
The cost of good sold is not the only expense! It’s time for America to teach a basic understanding of business finance.
You cannot look at the cost good of sold.
