They've got skin in the game. They personally know once your vision starts going it becomes important to save it and they are in a position to possibly make it happen for others! This is a huge win if it works. Short of Jesus healing the blind man, we have not had a way to regenerate the retina. Praise God for leading the researchers to this discovery!
AFAIK, it hadn't been tested on humans yet, plus there are other reasons like cataract surgery or astigmatism to wear glasses besides retinal issues.
