"Soon" in astronomical terms means in a few hundred years. It could have already happened and we could find out about it next week. Or it could take another 10,000 years.
Yep. Although people seem to think it is close, it's been acting weird. It's ~642 light years away so anything we see from there is from 642 years in the past. If you believe the nasa/uni story of course.
Ok. There is a movie where at the end, two moons appear. I thought it was 2001, space oddesy, but can't find a summary to confirm. Is there anyone who has a better memory?
It would be nice, but we just can't predict when a star will go supernova. Betelgeuse has been on the supernova radar for most of my life ( life long amateur astronomer ) it's over 640 light years away and could have blown 600 years ago - we'd still have 40-50 years before we'd see it.
It is definitely one of the front running candidates, it's been in it's basic end stage for a long time, but wasn't until 2019 that some real changes were noticed and astronomers started talking about it might be close.
Will be fairly cool to see when it goes go, will be brighter than the full moon and will most likely be able to be seen during the day. We should be a safe enough distance away to not have to worry about gamma ray bursts, and that will only be a factor if one Betelgeuse's poles is pointed in our direction when it blows.
Lori Lightfoot is gay and not blowing anyone

I know this thread is getting stale, but I can't believe no one said it:
Betelgeuse Betelgeuse Betelgeuse
besides Betelgeuse, also worth tracking T Coronae Borealis. it is expected to go nova any time from now until September.

Pax has been running this stream for 2 years (since I found it). I watched it updating every 30 min, checking in every few days for a couple months.
Then I realized what a waste of time, and it was clickbait.
Just my opinion.

Thanks for the info!
Terrifying username, but great comment!
Not gonna lie seems like click bait. Just watched it flip on count down. It might happen soon but not sure on this link
Yeah I agree, it's the only live-stream. The other vids were interesting.
