Talk about "mission creep", NATO has drifted as far away from its original intent as any agency could get. "North Atlantic Treaty Organization" was originally founded after WWII to offer the war-weakened nations of (ahem!) the North Atlantic states some protection from the Soviet Union, which was on an expansionist mission following the war.
Today, the Soviet Union is a distant memory, and NATO's reason for being no longer exists... and it is now toying with Eurasian places like Ukraine and Turkey as members or potential members.
