OK, we were speculating about this very thing, just yesterday. And I was asking if anyone has a wee map of said Bering Straight crossing...

Indeed. The British Fear and Paranoia of the U.S and Russia creating such a route. Directly lead to the creation of Canada. In order to frustrate the project.
As some of what is now Western Canada was beginning to explore their options as far as possibly joining the U.S. Which would give the U.S a direct land route to Alaska and Russia.
Another Fun Fact about the period.
Montreal Canada was the first stop of Jefferson Davis after his bail was paid by an odd collection of people. Including Wealthy Industrialists, and Northern Abolitionists.
Where he was surprisingly given a hero’s welcome. And entertained by people with suspected connections to British Spys and Diplomats.

Can't believe I have lived to see this. I have a great respect for the Russian soul. Amongst the world's best literature. Even with communism their soul survived. I pray for this people.
This could quite feasibly become one of the most profitable ventures in National Memory. Especially if parts of Western Canada decide to join the U.S thus giving us a direct land route to Alaska.
Trying to avert this was explicitly one of the driving forces behind the British creation of Canada.
Matt Ehret is one of my favorites. A history savante. Paired with Gordon McCormick on Breaking History? Ahhh. Those two have taught me so much. I knew about the planned railroad thanks to that show.
