The fragments wreaked havoc on his brain, killing him instantly. They were too small to exit him - hence no exit wound.
The bullet is either imbedded in the vest or managed to poke through with most of its energy absorbed.
Theory: the microphone clipped to the right side of his shirt - the black square you can see in the photos - had a much larger battery pack on the other side of the shirt.
The battery pack was detonated the same way the Hezbollah pagers were detonated a year ago.
The detonation sent a projectile/shrapnel into his neck, causing the severe wound we saw.
Nobody has said anything about finding a bullet except for some ridiculous story yesterday about how the bullet stopped just inside his skin.

No 30-06 is going to be found just under the skin from anything less than a mile, even if it bounced.
Everything within 6 inches of impact would have been pink misted.
