If you want to get into theology, there is a point where God turns people over to their depravity - I think that is an act of mercy, it gives them a last chance at salvation and sometimes severe punishment (consequences) is what it takes to bring people to repentance. Unfortunately, there are some who will throw their lot in with Satan even when they know the truth. Plenty of demons did, and they experienced God's presence in a very real way.
