Spoiler Alert: B&N has been tanking ever since they missed the boat on e-readers.
Not just that; the traditional publishing industry is tanking and B&N is stubbornly riding the ship down with it instead of reading the room (pun intended) and adapting to consumer tastes.
Around 20 years ago, Ron Burkle (who now owns Michael Jackson's "Neverland Ranch (or did)), tried to do a hostile takeover of B&N. More's the pity he failed to do so. The last time I was in a B&N, which was years ago, there were more games and gift items than there were actual books.
Thats because merchandise and Manga make up for the flagging book sales. They also expanded their toy department when Toys'R'Us went under and that accounts for a good portion of profit as well.
I could and probably should start a Substack on the shenanigans going on there and in the publishing industry as a whole because there's a lot to say.
That would be an interesting substack to read.

Last time I flew I tried to find a book or magazine worth reading. Selection was crap and was exactly the same at every store in the airport. Food selection wasn't much better.
Ended up just sleeping the flight away.
Kind of envy myself 30 years ago when flying sucked a helluva lot less. I still wasn't thrilled about it back then, but at least everything about it didn't suck like today.
