Amazon is closing a bunch of their “Fresh” stores in Southern California starting in November. Claiming they are “underperforming.” Most of these locations have been open less than four years.
I do my best to vet what I post as being current but it hard to get them all.
There are millions of piss ant x.com "look what I found" shit heads trying to be relevant online when there is only enough real stuff for about 10 people. So they dig up old crap and try and make it sound like it's a current event.
The AI cashiers being Actually Indians did come out some time ago but this story seems to be about the stores finally closing down so it's not entirely old news. It's not like this was discovered last week and the stores went out of business that fast.
The Babylon Bee is proven right again. There is a video where Chat GPT is operated by one guy.and he is struggling to answer questions. The video's end tag includes an appearance by Kirk Cameron.
Why would they use people instead of RFID tags on the goods? Usually, for this kind of store, you need to register a valid payment method to enter the store.
Why would they need AI to monitor which tags cross the exit gate?
I'm with you though. Why not just have barcode scanner read the price and total it. This has been going on since the 80's.
I used to work with the very first POS systems. I remember the POS system at the liquor store would sometime break down. The store could not open with master system down.
I would pull up, and all the drunks wrapped half way round the building would clap and yell words of gratitude when I got out of my vehicle.
Actually the RFID tag system is not that different than the shop lifting alarm gates, but the tags let the system know exactly which items you are taking out. No AI there.
A.I. - Stands for Actual Indians.
I prefer A55hole Indians.
Yet again.
"Thank you come again!"... WTF did that checkout just say?
“Nothin’ saar, carry on!”

It has been obvious to me that "AI" is the next round of bullshit.
It's both bullshit and terrifying.
The public gets bullshit AI features while they build out the surveillance ai network.
But hey the public loves it because you can ask stupid questions, and generate cat pictures.
It's amazing how many people are sucked into this.
This came to light a long time ago...

No worries...
I definitely get it...

Funny. Find it. I like to see that.
It is just another example of the Bee making a correct prophecy.

You got me there pal.
